{"id":383,"date":"2013-08-15T09:16:28","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T19:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/lithomps\/?page_id=383"},"modified":"2016-08-11T15:07:29","modified_gmt":"2016-08-12T01:07:29","slug":"pe-syllabus-2013-14","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/lithomps\/pe-syllabus-2013-14\/","title":{"rendered":"PE Syllabus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/lithomps\/files\/2011\/08\/Syllabus-2012-20135.docx\">\u00a0<\/a><strong>Middle School Physical Education Department Course Summary 2016-17<br \/>\nLinda Thompson<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>lithomps@ksbe.edu 982-0479<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Physical Education Program is designed to develop the emotional, mental, physical, and social aspects of living necessary for a happy and productive life.<\/p>\n<p>Students are introduced to the fundamentals of team and individual sports, which include skills, rules, and game strategy as well as swimming and physical fitness.<\/p>\n<p>Emphasis in the program is placed on providing an opportunity for individual growth and success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COURSE GOALS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To maintain and improve on physical, social, and mental fitness.<\/p>\n<p>To develop a basic knowledge of skills, cleanliness, sportsmanship, and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>To instill growth through interaction with others in non-competitive and competitive situations.<\/p>\n<p>To instill healthy life habits that will help them become productive citizens at school, home and in the community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COURSE MATERIALS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Various internet websites, handouts and multimedia sources, fitness folders are used to keep track of student\u2019s progress.\u00a0 Skill progression is developed through verbal instruction\/demonstration and student practice time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LEARNER EXPECTATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kamehameha students are expected to do their personal best. Everyone has different abilities and talents, and students should work hard on improving them. It is their kuleana. They must learn how to cooperate and work well with<br \/>\ntheir peers. The purpose of the program is to help them accomplish this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General Information:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*Be on time<br \/>\n*Wear proper PE uniform and PE sneakers<br \/>\n*Turn in assignments at the beginning of class<br \/>\n*Participate daily<br \/>\n*Excused absences- make up work unless it is a medical excuse, ie., broken leg *Shower at the end of each class<br \/>\n*Keep an extra pair of undergarments and socks in your locker<br \/>\n*Keep locker locked \u2013 return at the end of the year. ($7 for missing locks)<br \/>\n*Pick up after yourself<br \/>\n*Secure your belongings<br \/>\n*No Loitering or horseplay in the locker rooms<br \/>\n*Students will not enter the office or equipment areas unless given permission by the teacher<br \/>\n*NO CELL PHONES IN THE LOCKER ROOM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Needs:<br \/>\n<\/strong>1. Three P.E. Shirts labeled as instructed by P.E. Teacher.<br \/>\n2. Three P.E. Shorts labeled as instructed by P.E. Teacher.<br \/>\n3. Athletic Shoes preferably no skateboarding shoes or black soles.<br \/>\n4. Socks as defined by handbook.<br \/>\n5. Personal Hygiene products i.e. shampoo, body soap, deodorant, brush, etc.<br \/>\n6. Extra undergarments and socks to be left in their lockers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>PLEASE LABEL <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ALL <\/span>OF YOUR CHILD\u2019S BELONGINGS<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*Please refer to the Student and Parent Handbook<\/p>\n<p><strong>SWIMMING POOL RULES AND REGULATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*School issued One piece bathing suit.<br \/>\n*Shower prior to entering pool.<br \/>\n*Walk on pool deck.<br \/>\n*No pushing or shoving people into the pool<br \/>\n*Students with a fever, open sores, or bandaged wounds are not allowed in pool. *Contamination is prohibited.<br \/>\n*All swim classes missed must be made up except medical conditions with a doctor note.<br \/>\nClasses not made up will result in a zero. \u00a0Communication is very important with the teacher as to when make-ups will be done. \u00a0After school is also an option.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Students will need to bring a one bathing suit and towel to class on swim days. KS PE towels are not allowed to go to the HS pool.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Goggles are strongly encouraged.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>**PE uniforms are required during every PE class meeting. Lack of PE uniform will result in the following:\u2028 \u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>PER TRIMESTER <\/em><strong><em>3 days <\/em><\/strong><em>no uniform (Level 1-\u00ad<\/em><em>\u2010<\/em><em>Dress code violation) = 5 days teacher detention using card + parent contact via phone or email + point deduction from cumulative \u201cformative uniform\u201d grade.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>GRADING:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>80% Summative Assessment=<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*Run times\/ based on individual effort\/improvement<br \/>\n*Swim times\/ based on individual effort\/improvement<br \/>\n*Skills\/performance- final<br \/>\n*Big Run, Biathlon (6th), 2 mile run (7th)<br \/>\n*Final tests<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>20% Formative=<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*Run times<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> *swim times<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>*Class work<br \/>\n*Journal writing<br \/>\n*Teacher and self -evaluations<br \/>\n*Quizzes<br \/>\n*Homework<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warm-up and activities\/sports are also graded for participation, effort, sportsmanship, and showing respect to the teacher, self, and others.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If students cannot participate due to an injury or illness, they will be sent to the health room unless they have a note from the parents\/guardians.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO THIS YEAR? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Activities planned are as follows, but are subject to change are:<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n(PE Swim, bike and run schedule is located on my blog.)<br \/>\n<strong>Swimming<\/strong><br \/>\nBiking<br \/>\nRunning<br \/>\nFitness-jump roping, weights, kickboxing, yoga, step aerobics, dance<br \/>\nBasketball<br \/>\nSoftball<br \/>\nWeights<br \/>\nTennis<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The <em>running program <\/em>at the middle school is designed to help improve their cardiovascular endurance and to prepare them for the high school PE program. All students will participate in the BIG RUN 1.5 miles. \u00a0 The run is fun, challenging, and rewarding. Each child is expected to do his\/her personal best.
