Introduction: Purpose?

Introduce yourself.
Discuss your potential teaching area (such as special ed., elementary ed., secondary social studies), possible college and academic major, along with a personal statement that tells something about yourself (such as family, jobs, hobbies).  Discuss why you are considering teaching, and your goals for this class.

My name is Briana Pacheco and I live in Paradise Park. I enjoy photography, reading, hanging out with friends, and many types of art. As of now, I actually do hope to major in elementary education in college. I think my potential teaching area would range from elementary to middle school education. I feel that I would be comfortable possibly teaching 1st or 7th grade. I am mostly interested in teaching science or english but I do like that elementary educators need to focus on bits of all subjects. I like that theyʻre able to incorporate subjects like math, english, science, and art, and can show how different subjects connect. Iʻm not exactly sure what first made me interested in wanting to be a teacher but it was always something that Iʻve considered. I am also quite unsure about what exactly I want to do as a career and I feel that teaching just makes sense for me. Taking this class may really set me on the path I want to be on. I also donʻt know of any teachers in my family, so it would be nice to be the first. I think Iʻve always considered teaching because I like working with children, being creative, meeting new people, solving problems, and learning new things everyday. I also do have that mentality that teachers can change the world. They may not be able to literally change the world as a whole, but it is possible to change the world of an individual or even the way they look at the world. I feel that if I was able to make some kind of difference or help students get a step closer to the person they want to be, there wouldnʻt be a better feeling. Thereʻs so much to learn and teachers will always be needed. My goals for this class is to really step out of my comfort zone and genuinely explore this career path. I hope to learn as much as possible and figure out if I really want to pursue teaching. Even if I find out teaching isnʻt for me, I hope I learn to better understand myself in order to help and connect with others.

My name is Ashlie Perry, I live in Hawaiian Paradise Park with my four brothers, and my parents. My hobbies consists of reading and drawing. Teaching was something that I never originally thought to pursue until my sophomore year of high school. It was during that time where I got to observe and interact with kids inside a classroom. From there I went into an internship in the summer of my senior year and got to experience what its like to be a teacher for elementary students. After this internship I felt that elementary education was a teaching area that I had the potential to teach. One of my goals for this class is to learn more about what it takes to be a teacher and incorporate in my future career. A college that Iʻm currently looking at is UNLV and I choose to major in elementary education. Hopefully Iʻll be able to achieve my goal of becoming a teacher.

  3. Rachel Tanaka

Hi, I’m Rachel Tanaka, I am a junior, and I live in Hilo with my parents and our two dogs. Chase, my older brother, is currently away attending college at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. My interests include playing tennis, pretty much any kind of art, and going out with friends and family, whether it be going hiking to Hi’ilawe or staying in and watching a movie. When I think about what I want in a career, I know one thing to be certain: I have to enjoy what I do. I’ve always enjoyed spending time with little kids, but it never dawned on me that I could turn that into a career in teaching. My mom is the one who actually brought it to my attention and encouraged me to consider becoming a teacher. I volunteered two years ago at Summer Youth Academy in a class teaching four to five year olds. By the end of the program, I fell in love with that age group. I took pleasure in seeing their eyes light up when they learned something new or an idea clicked in their heads. For me, I like that kids at that age still need nurturing, but they aren’t babies anymore, and are just beginning to build a foundation as a learner. That is why my ideal teaching area would be in preschool or lower elementary, like first grade. I would even consider becoming art teacher so I could combine my passion for art with teaching. Towards the end of this past summer, I volunteered again at a small daycare, and I loved it! There were six kids, ranging from ages two through four, so it was my first time working with kids that young. It was chaotic just to manage that small amount of kids, some of whom are just learning the ropes of using a “big kid toilet.” So imagining myself with a whole classroom of preschoolers seems like a bit much for me. But despite the chaos, I enjoyed everyday and it was a good experience to work with a younger age group and see what it was like. To be quite honest, I’m a little scared to be in this class but I am very excited to explore a career in teaching and see whether it really is the right fit for me. My goal for this class to to be able to know for sure by the end of it if I want to become a teacher, and if so learn the skills to become an effective teacher who makes a positive impact on her students.

  4. Keighsen Walker

My name is Keighsen Walker, I’m from Waimea where I live with my two younger sisters, my mom, and also my dad. Some of the hobbies that I have is ranching, fixing things, fishing, spearfishing, and also hunting. I guess you could say that I’m a person who loves being in the outdoors. I have been fortunate to watch and observe people who have different cultural backgrounds than me, which helped me to look at situations with different perspectives. I think that this experience will help me through out this class and hopefully through out a teacher career. I feel like my potential teaching area will be high school or middle school. The subject that I think that I would teach would either be in the science department or engineering department. The reason why I would like to teach in these departments is because I learn better when I work with my hands. I think the highest level of education that I would want for this career would maybe getting my masters if not maybe a bachelors degree. As for myself, I’d call myself outgoing, always trying to do things with the best of my abilities, but also quiet and shy. I sometimes can get rowdy and want to have fun when I’m comfortable with my environment. I think my goal in this class is to see and experience what it takes to be a teacher so that if I become a teacher I can help improve our society.

Aloha, I am Kegan Miura and I am from Hilo, Hawaii and I am excited to be here in this teaching class. I feel being able to teach requires so many skills that we need to be successful in everyday life. These skills like communication, patience and respect not only helps teachers inspire and shape the next generation but also help those who teach become more compassionate and understanding people in our society. In college I have always had a firm belief that I would continue on to study business administration or political science and I feel an exploration in education would be able to help me become an effective listener and leader. My family has been in education for many years, my grandmother who is a retired teacher had two children, my uncle and my mother who both became teachers and have taught in different environments. Their stories and experiences have also drawn me into taking this class to see how big an impact teachers have into encouraging students to reach their potential. In this class I hope to be able to reach out to find myself as a learner and really open up new opportunities to practice different skills to become an effective communicator. I find it so interesting that every one of us is different yet so similar, and as a teacher they are blessed to open up doors of possibilities and create dreams that can change a life forever. I am really excited to see what this class has in store for me and I look forward to growing as a learner to improve who I am as a person!

As for my future career my original career that I wanted to go into was Physical Therapy or Athletic training. When hearing about Lamaku it opened my eyes to another career path which was teaching. A teaching area that I would be interested in would be middle school PE. The reason for that is because I feel more at ease when I am active.
A possible academic major that I would like to go into is psychology. This is because I’ve always found it interesting. I’ve always been curious when it comes to what goes on with our brains when it comes to our actions.
As for who I am, I consider myself an athlete that is constantly moving but still is aware of the people around me. My goal for this class is to become more knowledgable in educating and social behavior.

I have always loved to learn things by hearing stories and doing hands on activities. On the other hand I have a hard time learning by sitting through a lecture and reading many pages that I cannot connect with. I am interested in teaching science to high school students. I am thinking of teaching science because of the hands on experience that I can offer to my students. I have noticed, from experience, that the more passionate a teacher is about their subject of study they can hold my attention longer than those who were going through the motions.
My interest in teaching began when I would sit in lecturing classes. I thought that if I were the teacher I would find more interesting ways to get the lesson across to my students. Some part of me wants to pass on the knowledge that I have gained. The other part wants to help students like myself understand and experience a style of teaching that may be new to them. My overall goal for this class is to learn how to effectively connect with the students and find interesting ways to teach a lesson.

Iʻm Nanea Thomas, and I live in Volcano with my dad and younger brother, Kauila; my older brother is currently at the University of Colorado Boulder. I love to laugh and hang out with my friends and family both indoors and out. Iʻm taking this class because teaching is something I could see myself doing as a career, or at least I think so at this time. My older brother, Kūpaʻa, always makes jokes saying, “Nanea, I could so see you teaching small children,” and honestly I think I could. I could see myself teaching the second grade because I feel like thatʻs an ideal age. Most should have bathroom control and crying control by that time, I hope, and I feel like I could really love the children and support them in their growth as both students and people. Before I can teach though, I need the education for it, and Iʻm considering going to University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo or a school on the West Coast. Iʻm still undecided because Iʻm not sure what I want to major in, but thatʻs what Iʻm taking Lamakū for. Iʻm taking this class because it will help me make a couple of decisions, what grade I may want to teach and if I even want to teach at all! Iʻm really excided to see what this class has instore and stoked to be one class closer to being out of high school and onto bigger, better things.

As I look into the teaching work field I am curious on experimenting different types of teaching. This career is not what I plan to be right after high school, but it is a thought to experience. The main goal in teaching is making a difference and building relationships with others that will last a lifetime. A teaching area I would like to first look into is being a counselor. As iv’e experienced in the past, counselors have really made a difference in my life while pushing myself to be the best I can be. My next teaching area I am interested in will be any grade level in the middle school. As much as I love little kids, I can only handle so much of them at once. So that is why I choose middle school because they are at a stage where maturity comes into play and that is all about growing up. The teachers are very professional in their working environment preparing their students for high school.
Believe it or not, I am a person that thinks about the future 24/7. As we slowly enter the real world I am planning on focusing in being a flight attendant. Travel means everything to me, especially when it comes down to learning different cultures and viewing beautiful sights. My preparation to my goal right now is working in a retail store. This month makes one year with working and I do not regret working at a young age. Using my people skills with different types of customers is exactly what I need to prepare myself for if I am going to become a flight attendant.
I am very eager into communicating with people and building new relationships. I am here in Lamakū to figure out if teaching is something I really want to look into. The fact that we get the opportunity to shadow a teacher, we can get a feel on the preparation periods as well as regular class periods. By going through the motions in seeing teachers teach with give me a good feeling if I would like to pursue this thought or not.

Iʻve never really considered teaching as a potential and future career but itʻs something that I want to look in to and learn more about. A teaching area that I feel would be the best fit for me is art because of the fact that itʻs something I can see myself sharing with others. I also take a lot of interest in journalism, news broadcasting and videography.
A possible academic major that I am aiming towards would be in journalism because I find it amazing telling people stories through my words and voice. I am also fairly into art and the many other aspects that come with it. I used to draw on everything and everything ! Even including our hallway walls, which of course drove my parents crazy. According to my mom, I even used to draw on myself. But as the years went by, my love for art grew with me and turned into things that matured with my age, like painting, drawing and crafting. Now that I am older iʻd like to consider my perspective on art to be more creative in some ways and also a bit more confident.
I for one, always saw myself as a very unique , exotic and blossoming individual in this world full of many beautiful souls, striving to find myself. My ultimate goal for this class is to learn more about our school systems and to see what our teachers and educators have to go through to benefit our future generations as a whole.
