Hello, and welcome to my blog site – the trunk from which all my classes branch.

While you’re here, please feel free to explore the Creative Writing tabs. They are chock full of student writing for your reading pleasure, and, if you like what you see, leave them a comment!

To learn about the different courses I teach, click on the appropriate tab above.

To learn about me, keep reading.

I have taught language arts for more than 20 years, the past thirteen at Kamehameha Schools Maui in Pukalani, Hawai’i, where I currently teach English 12, Journalism 1 & 2, Creative Writing 1 & 2, and Literary Survey (American and British).

In addition to teaching duties, I am also the adviser for the school newspaper and news site and Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists. In fact, if you have a student involved in athletics, you’ve probably seen me at the games, getting the facts and supervising my student reporters on the job.

The school newspaper, which I have advised since its founding, has won district and state awards annually, including Best Newspaper in the State for the 2010-11 and 2012-13 school years. Our website has consistently won awards for excellence.

Check out our website and see what we do by clicking here or visiting www.kaleoonakoa.org!

A graduate of the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama campus, I also have a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fullerton, and a master’s degree in instructional technology from Grand Canyon University. Additionally, I hold a California teaching credential for English, a Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development certificate, and am a graduate fellow of the 2009 ASNE Reynolds Institute.

If you would like to contact me, the best way to reach  me is by email: kyhaina@ksbe.edu. My desk phone number is (808) 573-7019, but please do not call during school hours, that is, before 2:30 p.m.
