{"id":231,"date":"2014-10-23T11:27:27","date_gmt":"2014-10-23T21:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/khsphotography\/?page_id=231"},"modified":"2020-04-21T19:57:55","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T05:57:55","slug":"photo-i-project-3-principles-of-composition","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/photo-i\/photo-i-project-guidelines\/photo-i-project-3-principles-of-composition\/","title":{"rendered":"Photo I &#8211; Project 5: Composition &#038; Storytelling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>N\u0101n\u0101 i ke kumu.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Look to the source.\u00a0<\/em> Utilize various sources (i.e. kupuna, kumu, loea, mo\u02bbolelo, wahi pana, mo\u02bbomeheu) to foster inquiry and seek knowledge.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>OVERVIEW:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Composition is a visual tool to help you communicate relationships and meaning.\u00a0 A photographer utilizes different Elements of Design and Principles of Composition to tell a viewer what to look at, what is important in a frame, and perhaps how they should feel when looking at an image. \u00a0<strong>For this project focusing on composition, you are to use what we learned about composition and sequencing to communicate a story about <em>connections<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Think about how you could watch a movie or TV show in a foreign language or on mute and still understand elements of the story. \u00a0Part of that is because of composition and sequencing of shots. \u00a0Film makers are hyper aware of composition and how\u00a0<em>balance<\/em>, <em>framing\/space<\/em>, <em>perspective<\/em>, and <em>juxtaposition<\/em>\u00a0can be used to communicate <strong>relationships and power<\/strong> in a scene.\u00a0 Guiding lines and frames-within-a-frame to help partition space or create borders around important things in your scene. \u00a0Size, color, and value can help tell you who is the main subject, who is a good guy or the villain, or may foreshadow what\u02bbs to come. \u00a0This movie below does a great job of explaining exactly how composition is one of the most important parts of storytelling in movies.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CvLQJReDhic\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For this project, think like a cinematographer. \u00a0How do you tell a story through images alone? \u00a0You will shoot a series of pictures and choose 3 of them to edit and collage together to communicate a story or reference the idea of <em>connections<\/em>. \u00a0Consider what images come to mind when you see the word &#8220;connect&#8221;. \u00a0What objects do you see? \u00a0What does connection look like? \u00a0How does something connect? \u00a0On the flip side, think about disconnection and what that looks like? \u00a0How can you show separation and distance? \u00a0Or something that was once broken being repaired? \u00a0Connection\/Disconnection | \u00a0Broken\/Whole \u00a0| \u00a0Lost\/Found \u00a0| Apart\/Together \u00a0| \u00a0Traveling from Point A to Point B are all different ways of looking at the same word and the same story.<\/p>\n<p>You can shoot this project with people, animals, landscapes, or even objects. \u00a0The story, subject, location is all up to you, and that freedom is part of the challenge of this project. \u00a0But \u00a0consider how to establish that these 3 different pictures are related or belong to the same story. \u00a0It helps to have similar subject matter in all 3 image OR have common Elements of Art uniting the pictures. \u00a0Perhaps all your pictures have the same shade of blue, or there\u02bbs a cat in all the images, or there\u02bbs a strong horizontal line that goes through all 3 images. \u00a0Look at the images below and consider why they look like they belong together.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2020\/04\/Storytelling-Example01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1991 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2020\/04\/Storytelling-Example01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2020\/04\/Storytelling-Example01.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2020\/04\/Storytelling-Example01-300x76.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2020\/04\/Storytelling-Example01-768x194.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2020\/04\/Storytelling-Example01-500x126.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another thing that is\u00a0important about this project is sequence of images, or which picture is first, second, and third and how that communicates relationships, a transition, or passage of time. \u00a0Consider the set of images above. \u00a0Which is the first image you look at and which is the last or &#8220;ending&#8221; to the story. \u00a0 See how the images on the far left and right have people traveling and meeting in the middle?
