{"id":169,"date":"2016-11-18T14:17:02","date_gmt":"2016-11-19T00:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/kesscience\/?p=169"},"modified":"2016-11-18T14:20:16","modified_gmt":"2016-11-19T00:20:16","slug":"grade-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kesscience\/2016\/11\/18\/grade-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Grade 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Grade 3 scientists have been investigating the human body.\u00a0 Bones give our bodies form and protection.\u00a0 We have used different kinds of models to study our bones\u2014our own bodies, paper drawings, plastic models and now, look&#8212;real bones!\u00a0 These bones are what an owl had for dinner\u2014in an owl pellet.\u00a0 Owls eat their food whole and then spit up the bones and fur.\u00a0 Scientists can collect these owl pellets and study the bones inside&#8212;that\u2019s what we did in lab.\u00a0 The pellets are heated to make them safe from bacteria and ready for investigations.\u00a0 Our pellets came from California and the Pacific Northwest but we have owls in Hawai\u2019i.\u00a0 The pueo is the Hawaiian short-eared owl, we also have barn owls here.\u00a0 Some families have the owl as their amakua.\u00a0 Owls have many stories and meanings for all kinds of people around the world.\u00a0 What else would you like to know about owls?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kesscience\/files\/2016\/11\/joan-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"joan\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For our lab investigation, we collected pieces of the different bones we found and sorted them out to find out more about the animals that were on the owl\u2019s dinner menu.\u00a0 Some of those bones really looked like bones we have!\u00a0 Did you know you have bones that are similar to a mouse, rat or vole?\u00a0\u00a0 Which bones are interesting to you?\u00a0 You have over 200 to choose from!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-121\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kesscience\/files\/2016\/11\/DSCN3762-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"dscn3762\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kesscience\/files\/2016\/11\/DSCN3764-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"dscn3764\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our next adventure has started at our home science labs.\u00a0 We are taking a chicken bone and putting it in vinegar.\u00a0 I wonder if people chose different bones?\u00a0 This is a chemistry adventure because vinegar is a kind of acid.\u00a0 It takes a week to 10 days.\u00a0 I wonder what people are finding out as they do this experiment at home?\u00a0 We will share our results but there is this holiday coming up that has great bones!\u00a0 Will you have this big bird skeleton at your house to study too?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Grade 3 scientists have been investigating the human body.\u00a0 Bones give our bodies form and protection.\u00a0 We have used different kinds of models to study our bones\u2014our own bodies, paper drawings, plastic models and now, look&#8212;real bones!\u00a0 These bones are &hellip;
