PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Aloha mai kākou parents and students,

As we prepare for this season of thanksgiving, we know that there are many blessings to be thankful for. We are thankful for our families, our kumu and our school. We are also thankful for all of the blessings that God brings into our lives every moment of each and every day. During this busy time of the year, may I ask that you take time each day to reflect with your child(ren) on the value of being grateful and pray for other people and our world. Aloha Lā Ho`omaika`i - Happy Thanksgiving Kākou!

All are invited to attend the annual KES Christmas Program which will be held on Friday, December 14th at 9:00 a.m. at Kekūhaupi`o Gymnasium. Parking will be available on the middle school field. Families may ride shuttle buses up to Kekūhaupi`o. Shuttle service will begin at 7:30 a.m. After the program, at about 10:45 a.m., families may ride the shuttle buses back to the field. We look forward to seeing all of our families there at the Christmas Program. All are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the program.

Parents are asked to teach your child(ren) to practice safety first during the holiday season. Ensure that your child(ren) has/have ample time to get to school and other events. Remind children about road and crosswalk safety. Teach them to practice courtesy and say aloha and mahalo to those who are kind to them. Have a wonderful and blessed holiday season!

A hui hou me ke aloha,

Mr. Holoua Stender

MASTER CALENDAR CHANGE REMINDER

VISITOR CHECK-IN

Please remember to sign in at the office if you will be on campus as a volunteer during schools hours, 7:45 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. If you have something you need to deliver to your child’s classroom, please be sure to bring it to the office instead of going directly to the classroom. The office staff will contact your child’s teacher to have them pick it up in the office or the staff will deliver it to the classroom. These procedures are in place to maintain a safe campus for all students. Mahalo in advance for your kokua.

LEAVE ELIGIBILITY REQUEST FORMS

This is a reminder that leave forms are due in to the office at least two weeks prior to the date of leave. It is important that we notify all teachers in advance via routing of the leave form. Please keep in mind that the excused leave is dependent upon your child’s current attendance record and academic standing. In addition, you and your child are responsible for making any arrangements necessary to make up missed work, which may include before and after school study hall sessions. Please be advised that the leave is intended for “special” situations that require your child to be away from school.

DRESS CODE REMINDERS

We’d like to share some reminders regarding dress and appearance for our KES students. Please be sure students are in KS sanctioned uniform garments that can be purchased either from our uniform vendor, Mills, or gently used from the KS thrift store. In addition, please review the sections on outerwear items such as jackets and sweatshirt hoodies. Belts are required for grades 3-6. Hair color should be the child’s natural hair color, no highlights or dyed hair please for both boys and girls, and please be sure to regularly check boy’s hair lengths. We appreciate your support and kokua in ensuring our students meet the grooming standards outlined in the handbook.

2006-2007 GMADE AND GRADE PROGRESS REPORT

Data is a powerful indicator of student performance and success. Our faculty and staff continuously use data to inform our curriculum, instruction, and assessment decisions. Data is compiled and analyzed through progressfolios, performances, student observations, and classroom and standardized assessments. The Group Mathematics Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation (GMADE) and the Group Reading Assessment Diagnostic Evaluation (GRADE) are two standardized assessments that measure student performance and allow us to monitor progress over the course of elementary school.

The following charts reflect student growth over the 2006-2007 school year. They are based on data gathered from fall and spring assessments. The Growth Scale Value (GSV) is the instrument used to monitor growth in student performance over time. Our children have made considerable progress in the areas of reading and mathematics. Each grade level demonstrated great gains over the course of the school year and outperformed the national average. We are proud of their success and look forward to continued success into future.
