Early Release Day - September 17, 2008

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Aloha e Nā `Ohana,

The master calendar for the 2008-2009 school year has one new feature, Early Release Days.  The first of four is scheduled for Wednesday, September 17th.  We shared with you at Open Houses that the dismissal time would be at 1:00 p.m.  There has been a change to that time to align with dismissal times at the middle and high school.  The new dismissal time is 12:30 p.m.  Please note that all students will be served lunch prior to the 12:30 p.m. dismissal.

The following is a schedule for pick up and shuttles to the terminal and rural areas:

12:35-12:55 p.m.:     Grades K-2:  Nahi`ena`ena Island Car Pick up

Grades 3-6:  Kamāmalu Lower Car Pick up

12:35 p.m.:               Terminal Shuttle (Students not picked up by 1:00 p.m. will be brought back to the KES Office.  You will be contacted upon their return.)

12:45 p.m.:               Early Bus Shuttles:  (Kailua, Kaneohe, Enchanted Lakes, Waimanalo, Maunawili & Pearl City/Aiea)

12:55 p.m.:               Late Bus Shuttles:  (All other rural service areas)

Swim shuttle:             No Swim Shuttle

Swim Club will begin at 3:00 p.m. but students are NOT ALLOWED to stay on campus between dismissal and swim club practice.  You will need to make arrangements for their transportation home and then return to campus for Swim Club or enroll in Kama`āina Kids (limited space available).

The elementary school will be the first pick up site for buses, which will then proceed to middle school and high school before leaving campus.  Please be at your child’s bus pick up location no later than 45 minutes after the KES departure time.

In addition, Kama`āina Kids will provide services to those students who are currently enrolled on a regular basis.  They will also offer up to 25 spaces for those students who are not enrolled in their program on a first come, first serve basis.  Applications are attached and should be submitted to the office as soon as possible.  Once the program is full, we will place additional families on the waiting list.  The cost for all students registered for Kama`äina Kids service on Early Release days will be $10.00, due and payable prior to September 17th.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 842-8383.

Accreditation Update

Friday, April 11th, 2008

A committee of educators from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) recently visited Kamehameha Elementary School Käpalama on February 11th and 12th as part of our ongoing accreditation process. The purpose of accreditation is to clarify the school’s mission and outcomes, assess the impact of programs on students’ academic and personal growth, and develop and monitor a school improvement program for enhancing education. The committee was clearly impressed with our dedication to our Native Hawaiian children as evidenced through the many examples of wonderful teaching in our classrooms. The attached PowerPoint presentation, shown at the April 10th ATP Meeting, highlights our school’s progress throughout this process and the committee’s recommendations as we continue this journey.
