A First Grade Visit
No, these are not the faces we usually see on this blog. Today KA came over for a visit and learned a bit about fractions- just as the 1B keiki did last week. We had a fun filled hour together! The 1B kids had fun over in kindergarten where they wrote about being a first grader and played in their old centers.

Na Koa Reward Water Play
The keiki had great fun on Fridayʻs final reward day. I read an email from Mr.Kudo that the company that provides the inflatables complimented Kula Ha‘a Ha‘a for our pono lavena. Good job keiki!

Eating Fractions
The first graders enjoyed choosing, cutting and eating fractions this morning using pancakes and bananas. Many keiki cut their pancakes into sixths, but the bananas wound up in way smaller pieces! Were they equal sizes? Most likely not! But the understanding of taking something that is whole and deciding how many parts to break it into was definitely alive in the class.

Aloha Aqua-Pond!
What a learning journey we have experienced with our aqua-pond this year! Today, we have come to a closure, having cleaned out our last garden and harvested the fish. A huge mahalo to Uncle Shon for his assistance in filleting the four remaining tilapia. The following are journal entries made by Lansyn and Isaiah, reflecting on this experience….enjoy!
Lansyn: Last November me and my friends got fish to put in our aqua-pond! We grew plants on the aqua-pond! Me and my friends helped the plants live but it started to get big. Then we had to cut the plants. Then we cutter everything. Then one fish died and there were four fish after that. The fish was called tilapia and it was very good! It was fun eating the tilapia!
Isaiah: First Uncle Shon scaled. Second he took out the guts. Third, then he filleted it. Fourth then he cut the head. There was only 16 pieces and 40 kids. (We ate a fraction of it!)

This Week At School 4/15-4/19
A few highlights of our week include a second visit from Chris a student with the mission to plant a million ‘ohia trees. He came earlier to talk to the keiki about the importance of caring for our natural resources. On Thursday he brought two trees that were planted outside of the science classroom. Your children helped to bless them and will continue to learn about these and other native plants in the second grade year.
We also wished Makamae a happy birthday!
