–Based on your research, write an opinion essay that answers the questions:
•How or why does (the Statue of Liberty or the Kamehameha Schools or both) represent freedom?
–Use examples from your research and notes to strengthen your paper
General reminders
•Notes = formative
•Timeline & Essay = summative
•Essay will be written by each student
•Each student research, and take notes – enough to do timeline and write essay
•Groups = research subject is The Statue of Liberty AND The Kamehameha Schools
•Individuals = choose one or both
Bibliography
•Completed bibliography page will be handed in when you hand in your essay
•Follow the rules of MLA
•List primary and secondary sources separately
•If handwriting notes, but doing bibliography electronically, in your note taking, use numbers to cross-reference on

•The topic is whatever you’re taking notes about, at the time (remember our practice session)

•France gave it to U.S. as friendship
•Sits on Ellis Island
•The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frederic Barthold.  He made the face to look like his mother.  It was given to the United States by France as a symbol of friendship and symbolized freedom.  The Statue of Liberty sits on Ellis Island.

•France gave it to U.S. as friendship
•Sits on Ellis Island
•In an effort to further build their friendship, France wanted to give the United States something that symbolized freedom.  This “something” resulted in the designing, and building, of the Statue of Liberty.  Frederic Bartholdi is credited with designed the statue.  He was inspired in different ways, one of them being his mother.  The inspiration for the face of the statue was Bartholdi’s mother.
