Identifying Text Worth Reading-VIDEO

Please take 4 minutes to view this video from The Teaching Channel explaining how to identify text worth reading and teaching.  This connects to our development around understanding the Common Core Shifts.

Related topics we covered included:

  • close reading
  • text dependent questioning

We will take some time during our faculty meeting to explore 7 Actions that Teachers Can Take Right Now: Text Complexity. During teaming we will continue to look at complexity of texts and how to select best texts to use for classroom discussion and deep thinking.

For teaming, please bring your laptop, earbuds and the latest texts that students read closely, or one that you plan on using.

You will be viewing a “tour”– Overview of Text Complexity, made with Zaption.

We will be using the Complexity analyzer to assess the complexity of our classroom text.

Reading to mathematics students:

“[Students]…learn to use language to focus and work through problems, to communicate ideas coherently and clearly, to organize ideas and structure arguments, to extend their thinking  and knowledge to encompass other perspectives and experiences, to understand their own problem solving-solving and thinking process as well as those of others, and to develop flexibility in representing and interpreting ideas.  At the same time, they begin to see mathematics, not as an isolated school subject, but as a life subject integral part of the greater world, with connections to concepts and knowledge encountered across the curriculum. “
