Papa Ekahi is learning about the ʻaina through planting. Leeward Haleakalā Watershed Restoration Partnership visited our keiki and showed them how they can kokua to impact our forest on Maui. One way they can help restore dryland forest is to grow native plants and food plants.
Students participated in making seed balls that will be used to reforest the Nuʻu and Kahikinui areas. The seed balls included ʻaʻaliʻi and ʻaweoweo seeds which will be dropped from a helicopter. Mahalo to Mr. Stenger, Andrea, Kealii and Christian for an engaging hands on activity that will help restore and preserve our ʻaina.
Papa ʻEkahi learned about the different characteristics of species in the animal kingdom at the Pacific Whale Foundation. Keiki gained knowledge about the Humpback Whale and then participated in a whale watch. Students learned observational skills by exploring surroundings in the kai region using binoculars and digital cameras. As a demonstration of Malama Honua and doing our part to protect the ocean environment, keiki participated in a beach clean-up.

Papa ʻEkahi in Kumu Kalehuaweheʻs class went on their first field trip to The Hawaii Nature Center. They explored the stream and forest in ‘Īao Valley while learning about survival needs, food chains, and stream life. Keiki demonstrated ways to help malama the habitats and keep it healthy. They also discovered archeology sites in the Kula region of the ahupuaʻa and gained understanding of what a community in Maui was like in the past.
We celebrated Boys’ Day on May 5 by making carp kites. It is a Japanese custom that began in China. Long ago warriors flew banners above the gateway of their homes to honor their sons. Flying the carp streamers encourages boys to work hard to reach high goals. Families in Hawai’i celebrate Boys’ Day to wish their boys health and happiness!
Our class is an Achieve3000 national contest winner! Students earned the most points during the Read to Succeed 2 contest. We use KidBiz3000 to help improve our reading skills. The contest motivated us to accelerate reading gains and improve critical college and career readiness skills. We can’t wait to celebrate our accomplishment and success when the prize arrives!
Our class has been learning from a series of Hawaiian-focused devotionals for the season of lent the past weeks. We reflected on the gift that God gave us in his son Jesus Christ. On Wednesday, we had an all school Easter chapel service.
