Our class learned about Girl’s Day. It began in China and was adopted in Japan over a thousand years ago. It is celebrated on March 3 and is also known as Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival).
In some homes, Japanese families display a set of dolls and doll furniture from the ancient royal court. Some brought their dolls to class and shared. We practiced our speaking and listening skills. To celebrate Girl’s Day we also made Japanese dolls. Girl’s in Hawaii also celebrate, though not in the same way that Japanese girls do. It is a day for families to show their aloha for their daughters Hawaiian style! It was a day to learn about our cultural values across the Pacific Ocean!
