Chicago School Visits 11.16.11

Great things are happening in Chicago schools!

We got to visit two schools today.  Both are charter schools with a vision for student wellness.

namaste CHARTER SCHOOL was designed to promote health and wellness, both inside and out.  The school day starts with morning movement, and movement continues throughout the day.  All children have one hour of PE a day, which includes PE (as we know it), walking around the neighborhood, and using fitness machines. (One HOUR!!) Snacks are healthy and lunch includes organically grown produce with vegetarian options.  The commitment to health was evident, as was the commitment to best literacy practices- in two languages.  Some students participate in a dual language program, learning how to read and write in both English and spanish.

The Academy for Global Citizenship is committed to helping students learn sustainable practices while maintaining a rigorous academic program. Students get hands on practice in the garden, the greenhouse, and in caring for chickens. (Theyʻre hoping for a barn one day!)

Both schools were inspirational, and reminded us that commitment to a vision and use of best practices gives students the opportunity to be academically successful!
