In Papa ‘Ekolu, the expectation for students is to become strong, skilled writers who can write in different genres. \u00a0For the first trimester, students focus on narrative writing, which involves writing a true story from a small moment in their lives.<\/p>\n

Below is a sample of a third grade writing that meets the grade level expectations for a narrative piece. \u00a0In the margins you will find comments that explain what the writer is able to do effectively. \u00a0Note that this piece is what students are striving to achieve by the end of third grade.<\/p>\n

The next picture is of our first shared piece of writing that was done together. \u00a0First we selected a small moment from our first days together in Third Grade. \u00a0Then we told the story aloud from beginning to end. \u00a0Finally, we collaborated with each other on the words to write down on the paper. \u00a0Please understand this is a rough draft and the written work includes errors. \u00a0The next step in the process would be to conference about the piece and then make the revisions.<\/p>\n
