Yesterday forty Papa ‘Ekolu students, ten parents and two teachers scurried off to Target and Safeway on a mission- to buy gifts for others. Both classes worked hard for weeks to earn money to help a family in need. After collecting over $900, our keiki went shopping for the basic needs of a family of six as well as a few gifts for the family’s four keiki for Christmas. The task was to buy all items on the shopping list and stay within a given budget. All groups accomplished what they set out to do as they also had the opportunity to problem solve and use their math skills learned in school.<\/p>\n

Today was a joyous but emotional day as the keiki and teachers presented the gifts they purchased to the mother of the family (Aunty Jazz), one of her keiki and a representative from the Big Island Giving Tree Organization. It was very touching to see how our gifts brought tears of joy to Aunty Jazz and others that watched on. <\/p>\n

In addition to adopting this family, Papa ‘Ekolu’s generosity also allowed them to buy gifts for two other young children from another family. These children will surely be happy to receive toys and books on Christmas day. <\/p>\n
