Money, Money, Money!

Papa ʻEkolu’s Market Day was a huge success! Vendors were beaming with excitement as the consumers broke through the doors of Kina’u Marketplace. Crepes, cotton candy, Minecraft keychains and Oobleck were just a few of the many different products being sold on Tuesday. Most producers made a profit, which was a great indication of success!

Mahalo nui loa to everyone who joined us that day to shop and enjoy the time to talk story as well. A special mahalo to our Papa ‘Ekolu families that gave their services to help make each and every business a success. Whether you bought materials, handled dangerous equipment, or transported products to school, your kōkua was deeply appreciated!

Young Artist Nationally Recognized

Our very own Elle from 3B was recognized this morning at Wā Piko for her outstanding art work that was created two years ago when she was in 1st Grade. The artwork is a drawing of sunflowers in a vase that was colored with oil pastels. It received a Certificate of Excellence in the MOA Museum of Art National Childrenʻs Art Exhibit.

Elle said, “It took hard work and a lot of practice coloring and drawing my sunflowers and vase. I feel happy because I did a lot of good work in it and I got recognized for it.”

Mahalo to Mrs. Rosehill for cultivating the talent of our keiki! It is through her teaching, support and guidance that our kids are able to thrive in the arts!

Hoʻomaikaʻi to Mrs. Rosehill and ELle!!!

Winter Break Reading Fun

I always chuckle when I say “Winter Break” while living in Hawaiʻi because it sure isnʻt the blustery weather I grew up in as a child. However, it is still break and the perfect (hectic) time to connect with our families and spread the joy of kahiau. And what better way to show our gratitude for one another than enjoying some reading time with a cup of hot cocoa and a nice snuggly blanket.

But realistically the routines can fly out the window with celebrations, travel and out-of-town guests. As your Ohana prepares for the holidays, use these tips for keeping kids engaged in learning and reading over winter break.

Read for fun! Whether your child is in the mood for holiday stories or the newest installment from a favorite series, winter break provides the perfect opportunity to set aside school books and read for fun. Make time for bedtime stories to create the routine and enjoy books on a daily basis.

Stock up on books at the local library. Help your child pick out books they’re interested in reading over the winter break. Libraries may also have fun, free holiday activities throughout the break.

Create a new tradition. A little predictability is comforting for kids. Starting a special Winter Break Story Time can be a new tradition that links reading with happy memories. Hot cocoa and your favorite stories will have the whole family feeling comfy and cozy, while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

To LOVE reading is the key to how we connect to the world we live in. “A book is a magical thing that lets you travel to far-away places without ever leaving your chair.” -Katrina Mayer

Merry Christmas everyone!

Spreading Christmas Joy!

Papa ‘Ekolu was able to spread Christmas joy this morning to our two adopted families as they presented their gifts to them in person! It was a touching moment to see the smiles and tears on the faces of the people who came to visit us today. Mahalo Third Graders for demonstrating the true meaning of Kahiau, Aloha and Lokomaika’i! We are so proud of you, and Pauahi would be, too!
