The State of Hawaii was very lucky to have had a very subdued tsunami on Saturday, February 27, 2010. It only reminds us that emergencies can occur at anytime and that we must be prepared. How many of you were prepared for this one?

Leave me a comment on what you and your family did to prepare for this tsunami emergency. Did your family have an emergency kit already with enough food, water and other supplies? Or did your family have to rush down to the stores to get water, gas, toilet paper and food?

I’m sure that many of you were excited to maybe have the opportunity to see a tsunami. So where were you when the first wave hit around 11:10 am? Did you go watch it from the Wailuku River or up on the high roads of Kukuau? Or better yet, at home on tv? Leave me a comment about how you watched the tsunami.

Frozen Paper

Materials:

  • freezer
  • heavy paper
  • water
  • shallow pan
  • cookie sheet
  • watercolor paints and brush

Art Experiment:

  1. Dip the paper in a shallow pan of water until itʻs thoroughly wet.
  2. Place the wet paper on a cookie sheet.
  3. Place the cookie sheet and paper in the freezer.
  4. When frozen, remove the paper from the freezer and paint on the paper before it thaws.

Variations:

  • Freeze a different variety of papers for painting – paper towel, coffee filter, construction paper, typing paper.
  • Draw with chalk on frozen paper.
  • Paint with tempera paints on froze paper.

Explanation:

When watercolor paint comes in contact with the FROZEN paper, it cools and nearly freezes too.  This cooling slows down the movement of the paint molecules and the paint begins to freeze and behave more like a solid.  If the paper begins to thaw or melt, the molecules of paint and water move faster and mix more easily, much like the usual behavior of paint and water.

Here is Mrs. Ah Heeʻs class starting their solar boats. Today was a day to explore using solar cells and constructing.  The students have already come up with great designs, solved many problems and have worked really well together.
