1.  What is the Hawaiian language graduation requirement?

Hawaiian Language Proficiency – All Kamehameha High School students, regardless of prior Hawaiian language study or experience, must demonstrate a level of Hawaiian language proficiency in the areas of listening, reading, speaking and writing:

  1. 1. through a series of assessments OR
    2. C- or higher in the second semester of Hawaiian 1 along with current Hawaiian 1 teacher recommendation OR
    3. Department head approval in consultation with high school administration

2.  What does the proficiency test look like?

The proficiency exam tests four skill areas – listening, reading, speaking and writing.

3.  When can my child take the proficiency test?

Students who are not enrolled in a Hawaiian 1 class should contact the Languages Department to schedule as assessment.

4.  What happens if my child does not pass the proficiency test?

All four skill areas are assessed and graded.  Students may retake the section(s) of the test that are not passed.  For example, a student may pass listening, reading, and writing tests.  So, he/she will only need to retake the speaking test.

5.  How can my child prepare for the proficiency test?
