Congratulations to William in KB and Leigh-Ann from KA, as they were able to complete the kindergarten level in IXL Math! Awesome
job! They have both moved onto the first grade level and learning more
everyday. William and Leigh-Ann were able to receive a special prize of
their choice from the treasure box!

Grade 5 Lemon Tree Planting

Earlier in the year, Mrs. Pai’s class took part in a lemonade-making math lesson which integrated skills such measurement, ratio, and proportions. As a culminating activity to our lemonade math lesson, as well as a means of modeling sustainability, papa `elima was able to plant their own Meyer lemon tree. We hope it will someday provide our kula with many lemons to make our own lemonade. Soon our fifth graders will pass on the kuleana in caring for this plant to our fourth graders. Mahalo to Mrs. Pai for purchasing the lemon tree, and to our awesome grounds crew: Uncle Kenny, Uncle Kawika, and Uncle Greg in assisting us with this project. Finally, thank you to Mrs. Samura for her time and showing us how a simple activity such as making lemonade can incorporate so much math!

We Love Pizza!

Last month Mrs. Pai’s class was rewarded with an `onolicious pizza party! They were able to master the most ixl skills amongst the upper elementary grades during the second trimester. All of their hard work allowed them to master over 600 skills! Awesome job 5A! Mrs. Derr’s kindergarten class was also able to enjoy a pizza party, as they were able to master the most skills from grades K-2.

February’s Winners

Look at all of these happy keiki! Why are they smiling? That’s because they are all winners for the month of February. Their names were drawn amongst all of their classmates who were able to master seven ixl skills. Congratulations to: Kacie, grade K; Lucas, grade 1; Hulali, grade 2; Kaimi, grade 3; Kylan, grade 4; and Gia, grade 5. They each won a Yogurtland gift card!

Robotics Night a Huge Success!

Robotics night on February 27th was attended by nearly 300 keiki and `ohana. Our special guests, Mr. Dale Olive and his awesome Waiakea High School robotics team and teachers provided a night full of fun and excitement. Students were able to work with their `ohana to build a brushbot. Then they were able to race against fellow classmates to see who could obtain the fastest time. Incredibly enough, there were brushbots traveling 50 centimeters within less than 3 seconds! A big mahalo goes out to all the participants and faculty who helped to make this a memorable night!

2nd Trimester IXL Winners

I’m so excited to share with you the two classes that were able to complete the most skills during second trimester! Overall, most of the classes were able to show an increase in the amount of mastered skills as compared to first trimester. So….in the lower elementary division, the class with 541 mastered skills was…..MRS. DERR’S CLASS!!! Then in the upper elementary division, the class with an amazing 654 skills mastered was….MRS. PAI’S CLASS!!! Congratulations to both classes. They will be enjoying an onolicious pizza party very, very soon! Stay tuned as I share some pics of their parties!

IXL Reminders

Here are just a few reminders about some important dates for ixl math. The last day to try and earn your seven skills and a prize for the month of January is…tomorrow, Thursday, January 31st! Also the last day to help your class possibly win the pizza party for having the most skills for the second trimester is February 14th. That’s only 15 days away! So keep practicing!

Robotics Night Coming Soon!

We are very excited to have our first robotics night at our Kula Ha`aha`a! Mark your calendars, because on Wednesday, February 27th, we have the great pleasure and priviledge of having special guests from Waiakea High School. They will be sharing some of their robots and talk about how math and science go hand-in-hand when building these robots. Each `ohana will also be able to build their own brushbot as well. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to see how much fun math and science can be!

Someone once asked me if there was ever a student that was able to complete all of the skills offered in a grade level. Well, now I can say, “Yes”. Last month, Kyler from Mrs. Derr’s kindergarten class completed all the skills from kindergarten and has begun to tackle the first grade skills! Way the go Kyler! In Kumu Kaleo’s first grade class, Lucas has also completed all of the first grade skills and has moved onto the second grade list. Awesome job, Lucas! I can’t wait to see who else will join these boys!
