Hangouts in the Classroom #TTTidbit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google Hangouts are a great way to connect classrooms.\u00a0 Imagine your class taking with the author of a book you just read, or bringing a voyager from the Malama Honua Voyage you&#8217;re studying into your classroom.\u00a0 The possibilities are endless (check out the end of this post for classroom ideas).\u00a0 But what exactly is a Google Hangout and how do you even get started?<\/p>\n<p>A Google Hangout, or GHO, a free video conferencing tool with up to 10 participants.\u00a0 But wait, don&#8217;t think polycom, think easy way to talk with someone right from your computer, wherever you are.\u00a0 No need to book a special room or pay for fancy equipment.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s really WAY better than video conferencing.\u00a0 You can share your screen, share a Google Doc, chat, wear a party hat, and more!\u00a0 Ready to get started?\u00a0 It&#8217;s Easy.\u00a0 All you need is a Google Plus account.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a teacher at Kamehameha Schools, you have one.\u00a0 If not, all you need is a gmail account.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/plus\/answer\/3466760?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=3049661\">Here<\/a> are instructions for setting up a Google Plus Account.<\/p>\n<p>Here are simple instructions for creating a Google Hangout:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3>Hover your cursor over <span style=\"color: #8ab1b6;\">Home<\/span> and scroll down and click on <span style=\"color: Google Doc in GHO is to just paste the link to your document in the chat.<\/h3>\n<h3>Now, start your Hangout and bring your conversations to life!<\/h3>\n<h2>Educational Applications<\/h2>\n<p>The educational application of Google Hangouts really are limitless.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a list of some ideas but please feel free to comment on this post to share your ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>take a virtual field trip<\/li>\n<li>invite an author into your classroom<\/li>\n<li>connect with another class<\/li>\n<li>broadcast a presentation (GHO on air allows for more viewers)<\/li>\n<li>create a mystery hangout<\/li>\n<li>bring in a guest speaker<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/gpluseduhangouts\/ideas\">Here&#8217;s a resource<\/a> with ideas from multiple educators<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachthought.com\/technology\/32-tips-for-using-google-hangouts-in-the-classroom\/\">Here are some great tips <\/a>for using GHO in the classroom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;re familiar with Skype in the Classroom you are probably familiar with their robust <a href=\"https:\/\/education.skype.com\/\">website<\/a> for connecting educators with other educators to collaborate globally.\u00a0 I have not found Google Hangout website that is as good as skypes, but I did find these Google Plus Communities:<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/communities\/114896744553237763030\">G+eduhangout<\/a><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/communities\/109532576382533836103\">Google Hangouts in Education<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Of course, if you know of some others, please add them in the comments.<\/p>\n<div
