This month is Connected Educator<\/a>\u00a0Month and what makes being a connected educator so awesome is the ability to have access to top educators around the world and see what they\u2019re reading, what they\u2019re writing, who they\u2019re following without having to fork out the big bucks to attend a conference.\u00a0 Connecting for me has been invaluable for my professional life and I wanted to share some of the ways I stay connected.\u00a0 I\u2019ll have more in depth posts\/tutorials on each of these tools coming soon.<\/p>\n

Twitter<\/a> \u2013 Twitter has changed my life, especially once I figured out how to use a hashtag<\/a>!\u00a0 Top educators around the globe use twitter to SHARE resources.\u00a0 When I have an edtech question, I ask my tweeps on twitter and often get numerous responses.\u00a0\u00a0 I usually browse twitter while I\u2019m having my morning coffee to see what\u2019s going on in the edtech world.<\/p>\n

Just a note – you don’t even have to be on Twitter to what gurus in education are sharing, \u00a0Are you a fan of David Warlick<\/a>? \u00a0Check out what he’s sharing at\u00a0https:\/\/twitter.com\/dwarlick<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Diigo<\/a> \u2013 Diigo is a social bookmarking site I use to bookmark resources.\u00a0 What I love about Diigo is my bookmarks are not housed on my computer, but I can access them from any computer as well as pretty much any mobile device.\u00a0 But what\u2019s even better, is I can see \"\"<\/a>other people\u2019s resources\u2026the people who are smarter than I am.\u00a0 In 2011-2012, our High School was in the planning year for a one-to-one project.\u00a0 Rather than spending hours and hours hunting for resources, I just found other educators who were on Diigo and used their bookmarks.\u00a0 Diigo also allows users to tag their bookmarks which makes locating that awesome resource you remember bookmarking a couple months ago really easy to find.<\/p>\n

Facebook<\/a>– I use facebook primarily for socializing and keeping up with my friends, but I also am part of some edtech groups and \u201clike\u201d many edtech pages.\u00a0 Like twitter, there are leaders in education who are sharing resources and talking about hot topics in todays education on Facebook.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Edmodo<\/a> \u2013 Edmodo is secure social networking site that can be used as a course management system for students.\u00a0 Edmodo is an excellent source for Professional Development.\u00a0 There are multiple groups users can join and share resources as well as post questions and have discussions.\u00a0 Glogster<\/a> has a group in Edmodo I have tapped into quite often.\u00a0 When I\u2019ve asked questions to the group, not only have I had responses from other Glogster members, but from Glogster themselves.<\/p>\n

iGoogle<\/a> \u2013 I use iGoogle as my blog reader.\u00a0 I used to use Google Reader<\/a>, but I like the way iGoogle displays the blogs better than reader.\u00a0 iGoogle is a great way to organize multiple email accounts, social networking accounts, aggregate blogs, and so much more.<\/p>\n

Ning<\/a> \u2013 Ning is another social networking resource where like minded educators get together to share resources, talk about common interests.\u00a0 My Favorites are Classroom 2.0<\/a>, Flipped Learning Network<\/a>, and The Educators PLN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By the way, Classroom 2.0 is hosting a Social Learning Summit<\/a> as I write this post. \u00a0I’m heading over as soon as I publish.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/a>Evernote<\/a> \u2013 I love using Evernote to take notes on multiple devices, but what I like even better is when there\u2019s someone else who takes notes and shares their notes with me!\u00a0 I can tag my notes so they\u2019re easy to find.\u00a0 I can include pictures and weblinks in my notes which is great for a visual learning such as myself.<\/p>\n

IFTTT<\/a> \u2013 This tool I discovered this summer and wish I would have invented it!\u00a0 IFTTT stands for \u201cIf this, then that\u201d.\u00a0 Basically, you can make a recipe to organize your online tools.\u00a0 For example, When I favorite a tweet in twitter, it bookmarks the url in my Diigo account.\u00a0 Jackpot!\u00a0 I usually browse twitter on my phone or iPad so I used to email myself the resources I wanted to bookmark and then bookmark them later once I got to my computer.\u00a0 Now, I just press the little star and voil\u00e0, it\u2019s done for me!<\/p>\n

I would like to mention, that there\u2019s no right or wrong way to connect.\u00a0 The tools I use may be different than the tools someone else may use. \u00a0Most of these tools I discovered because of my connections. \u00a0I\u2019m only as good as the people I surround myself with and with the Internet, I\u2019m surrounded by some pretty amazing edtech people who are willing to share so we can all be better. \u00a0That translates into helping kids and isn’t that why we’re educators?<\/p>\n
