OP/ED Lesson 1

“Don’t destroy my neighborhood, LAUSD”

1. What does the author do in the beginning to “hook” the audience? What does the author do at the end to create a “frame” for his piece?

2. The author overwhelmingly employs the use of pathos in his piece. Explain why he chose to do so, and, to make yours a convincing argument, cite examples of details the author uses to create this pathos.

3. Syntax can often be used to create an efect, to help communicate rhetorical purpose. In this OP/ED the author places quotation marks around many words and phrases. What is the author’s purpose for doing this? What attitude is conveyed by the use of this punctuation?
