Model Websites

Peruse the websites below. Then analyze: What choices have the designers made, and why? SOAPS them first, keeping careful notes on what you find, then look for the way each incorporates the appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos. Last, compare and contrast the three, making note of what they have/do in common, and what they do differently.

1. SOAPS

Subject: What is the site about? What statement does it make? What evidence do you find that lets you know?

Occasion: What precipitated the website? Can you tell? If so, how do you know?

Audience: For whom is this designed? How do you know?

Purpose: What is the site’s goal or mission? How can you tell?

Speaker (Writer/Designer): Who composed this? What do you know about him/her/it?

2. COMPARE AND CONTRAST: What elements of the three sites are similar? What elements are different? How successful are they in communicating their message?

3. Appeals: Look for logos, ethos, pathos and identify how each website incorporates each appeal.
