{"id":29,"date":"2011-11-22T22:09:34","date_gmt":"2011-11-22T22:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/counseling\/?page_id=29"},"modified":"2025-08-03T13:29:59","modified_gmt":"2025-08-03T23:29:59","slug":"services","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/counseling\/services\/","title":{"rendered":"Counseling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Counseling Services and Supports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Counseling Program exists to help students understand and accept themselves, make decisions, develop educational and career plans, and resolve special concerns they have as individuals.&nbsp; We align our programming services and supports to the <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolcounselor.org\/About-School-Counseling\/ASCA-National-Model-for-School-Counseling-Programs\">American School Counselors Association (ASCA) National Model<\/a>, &#8220;which guides school counselors in the development of programming that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>are based on data-informed decision making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>are delivered to all students systematically<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>include a developmentally appropriate curriculum focused on the mindsets and behaviors all students need for postsecondary readiness and success<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>close achievement and opportunity gaps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>result in improved student achievement, attendance and discipline&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are twenty-one Student Success Counselors and seven Behavioral Health Specialists who work with students in Grades 9-12.&nbsp; Our high school Counselors serve haum\u0101na, \u02bbohana and kumu in four major areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Counseling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prevent as well as to reduce haum\u0101na challenges through advising in registration process and course selection, monitoring activities and progress, discussing supports with teachers, working with haum\u0101na to help them realize and meet their responsibilities, and assisting with post-secondary financial aid and admissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Instruction and Advising<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure that all haum\u0101na receive appropriate, timely and consistent information, counselors provide mandatory advising sessions at all grade levels.\u00a0 Based on the needs of our haum\u0101na, counselors will provide small group and individual supports accordingly.  Guidance classes are taught at grades 9-12.  Grade-level Counselors conduct sessions to assist students in their personal and social growth, and to prepare them for college and\/or other post-secondary opportunities. Guidance large-group lessons take students from an awareness\/knowledge level to the application and practice stage as they demonstrate their understanding. Referrals, Consultation and Collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To advise kumu and faculty on counseling and advising techniques and inform them of any special concerns that students may have and well as to receive support when needs are outside of our scope of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Program Planning and School Supports<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To coordinate and follow through on necessary and desired contacts with our kula and with \u02bbohana, including engagement on topics such as stress, communication with teens, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advising curriculum at the 9th and 10th grade level includes sessions in self-esteem and motivation, goal setting, values clarification, coping with stress, understanding aptitude and achievement test results, decision-making, four-year planning, peer relationships, volunteer work, and discussions about careers and the local\/national job market. The 11th and 12th grade curriculum focuses on post-high school planning.
