Nohona Hawai`i – Haliewa

Lei Making

Educational Student Services (ESS) staff from Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island spent the day in Haliewa Town, Oahu. Kapua and Kalani hosted our staff and shared a variety of enriching experiences that allowed us to get connected to the land, and the quaint beach front community of Haliewa Town and Pauahi’s legacy lands. Our experiences ranged, from hiking, lei making, catch and release fish tagging, a tour of the Haliewa town and its viable crops of asparagus and sea corn. We had lunch by the ocean at the ASC pre-school, and enjoyed desert at the world famous Matsumoto’s Shave Ice, it sure lived up to its name!

After lunch we were entertained my Noe Hoopai, NIRRC East Hawaii, and Lehua Kaulukukui, NIRRC West Hawaii and Mavis Shiraishi-Nagao, NIRRC Oahu who created our ESS chant and mele.  We enjoyed the beautiful weather and the opportunity to make new friends, and reconnect with old-friends.
