It’s that time again, Kamahameha Schools Hawai`i is having their 13th annual juried art exhibition. This school wide show will open on the 6th of February at 5:30 p.m. at the East Hawai`i Cultural Center. Students pieces are themed around the title of the exhibit Eia ho`i au : Here I Am. This combined show represents Kamehameha students in elementary, middle, and high school. Selection of art work was made by division principals with the KS Headmaster choosing the “Headmaster’s Choice” awardees.
Eighteen 2-dimensional pieces are displayed in frames that are built and assembled by middle school students. In the V-TAM lab, students are instructed on the measurements and procedures in constructing each individual frame. In the 3-dimentional area, students have designed clay, mixed media, and paper into various finished pieces which are colorful and full of texture. The art this year is reflective of the artist own unique take on who they are and what they are interested in.
Several of the high school students in the exhibit are members of the Arts and Communications Academy, one of the five career academies students may choose to join in 11th and 12th Grades. The career academies offer students the opportunity to explore a more specialized curriculum in depth before they graduate.
Kamehameha Schools believes in providing children an education founded in Hawaiian tradition while expanding experiences and opportunities for keiki to grow. Our ongoing relationship with East Hawaii Cultural Center has provided a venue to expand the arts and promote creative thinkers. The exhibit toasts the playfulness of children as well as the thoughtful and sensitive work they are capable of producing.
