End of Year Reflection

images-13.jpegimages3.jpeg

The year is almost finished and you will soon be “big” 6th graders! The sad thing is that you will never be a 5th grader ever again in your life!

How has your paradigm shifted from the beginning of the year to now? Give specific examples.

What do you consider the highlights of this year?

If you look back at 5th grade one day, what would like to remember?

One way my paradigm has changed is that when I searched things on the internet I never really paid much attention to the source of my information, but after Mr. Chung fooled us with the onion news network report on unwilling Chinese people are launched into space, I became more careful. I really thought that it was true, and when Mr. Chung asked us if we had any questions about the made up report, no one asked what was the source or questions related to the source, such as: What news broadcast was this report on.

Some of the highlights this year in 5th grade were things like the 5th grade play and D.A.R.E. (Drug, Abuse, Resistance, Education) day. Other highlights were things such as all our very fun but educational field trips, some of which really helped us get in touch with our great Hawaiian heritage and culture.

If I look back at 5th grade one day which I most likely will, I would love to remember all the history lessons Mr. Chung taught us throughout the year!

Well, see you all next year and A-L-O-H-A ! ! !

One way my paradigm shifted or changed is that not everything people say is real, and sometimes or most times you have to look it up for yourself. An example is when Mr. Chung told us about U.S. propaganda and how they say everyone is equal and America is the land of the free, when the U.S. had slavery for a long time. Even though they say the Civil War banned slavery and the blacks and whites became equal, why is it that even a hundred years later, Martin Luther King and many other blacks were still getting beat up and killed.

One of the biggest highlight was the play because we got to learn so much about our kupuna. We got so much help from Mrs. Janet Zisk to Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell. Another highlight was the DARE program because it taught us to live a drug free, gang free, and alcohol-free life.

The thing I will remember most are the social studies lessons about all the wars, how they were started, why were they started, and how we could have prevented it. Another thing I will remember is if we ever get into some kind of trouble, we can always look to the time before to help us solve it.

  3. Kanoa Says:

I think my paradigm shifted because in the beginning of the year, I never really thought about what was happening in the world even though I knew there was a war going on. I never knew things that happened or is happening, like the Holocaust. I knew the Holocaust was very bad but with all the details I learned about it, it was worse than I ever imagined. I didn’t know about the silent genocides like in Darfur and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but after I learned about those subjects, I thought it was something that was very wrong. My paradigm changed because I now look at the world instead of just my life.

I think the highlights of this year were the 5th grade play and D.A.R.E day. I still believe that the 5th grade field day and the last day of school are also going to be 5th grade highlights. Another 5th grade highlight for me was our Wailele basketball tournament.

I would like to remember everything Mr. Chung taught us, but I would mainly like to remember things that would help me in my future like when he taught us about compound interest. I would also like to remember about when he said everything we want in life is outside the box, and we need to explore the world because we only get one life and everything is possible.

    SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR!

    ALOHA,
    KANOA

  4. Keoni Says:

My paradigm shifted from the beginning of the year by knowing that just memorizing the answer to a question doesn’t mean you know the answer fully. What proves that you know it fully is to connect facts with something else in the world. For example, the Panama Canal, Hawai‘i, and the war in the Far East. The Panama Canal was made so you wouldn’t have to sail your boat around South America, you could skip the 10 days and go through the canal. Hawaii was taken over so the ships could reload and get supplies to go to the war in the East.

I think one of the highlights this year was the 5th grade play. I think that is one of the most significant parts of our 5th grade year because we got to look at facts of the overthrow of the kingdom from different points of views, such as Cameron, Spencer and Ariana acting as the haoles who wanted to make money.

One thing I would mainly like to remember in 5th grade is the fact that we have a different teacher looking at views that other teachers don’t have. I want to know that because I love different things such as different teachers and experimenting what you have to do to make the teacher happy.

Bye! I hope I have a good class next year!

  5. kyla Says:

In fourth grade, if there were a debate on Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, I would have said Israeli without knowing what the conflict was about. But now I know to look at both sides of the argument first.
Also, I learned to look to see where my sources come from because I don’t want to give a report in high school with false information! I don’t want to watch something like the Onion News again! :)

I think the fifth grade play is one of our highlights because we got to learn about our history in a fun way that we won’t forget. Also, it helped our creativity too! :P Another highlight was the D.A.R.E. program. It taught us to live a drug free life! When anyone asks us to do drugs, we should Define, Assess, Rethink, and Evaluate. :D

I would like to remember compound interest as well because I could be rich someday with this. I guess I will miss Mr. Chung a little bit. Only the math, though. t is cool 8) how Mr. Chung taught us about the genocides in Africa because even though people said, “Never Again” after WWII, things are still going on like that.

    I’ll miss my friends in the summer!! :P :D :) 8) HUGS

    -Kyla

  6. Nainoa Says:

If you look back at 5th grade one day, what would like to remember?

My paradigm has shifted from fourth grade a lot. One of the ways my paradigm has shifted is that in the beginning of the year I just listened to what my teachers said. Now, I still listen to what my teachers have to say but now I have a bigger perspective so I can think for myself and I can look the subject up on my own. For example, I thought Christopher Columbus was a great person for discovering America and for other deeds, but I learned this year about a side Christopher Columbus the text books keep out. Columbus couldn’t have discovered America if someone was already there which was the Native Americans. Another way he wasn’t good was that when they took over the Native Americans, they made some as slaves and did other to the Native Americans.

Some of the highlights of this year was the fifth grade play because for me, I was the main character which was super scary because I had a ton of lines. So did Kanoa who had a long Hawaiian part. Another reason why the fifth grade play was so awesome was we got a ton of great comments from really high people on the staff at Kamehameha, like the CEO said that this was the best fifth grade play ever. My second highlight is when we had the basketball tournament with Mr.Chung and we won $500 in class money.

The one thing I would like to remember is the time when Mr.Chung taught us about how to think out of the box. I would like to remember that because if you think out of the box later in life, you will have better perspectives. Another thing that I would like to remember is compound interest. Like Kyla said, I could get really rich.8):)

  7. Kody Says:

My paradigm shifted when I ed Columbus was a person who started slavery. Before, I thought he was the best guy in the world. I thought he just brought people over from England. My paradigm also shifted when I learned about World War 2 and how many Jews died or got tortured.

Some highlights of this year that stood out to me was when we had a basketball tournament. We lost but its okay because we still played together. Another thing that I learned is how the Hawaiians counted. They counted by fours, like 1 2 3 4 10 and so on.

I would like to remember the day that we all met on the first day of school. That’s the day that we learned about the paradigms.:P

  8. Mira Says:

My paradigm shifted a lot from the beginning of the year!! For example, when Mr. Chung was doing the lesson about not to believing everything you hear (with the onion news network), my paradigm changed instantly because I was thinking, what if my teachers in the past were teaching me things that were not true? My paradigm also changed about the world. For instance, the conflicts between countries (like the Israelis and the Palestinians), I never knew anything about other countries, besides the things I learned from textbooks (which comes back to not believing everything you hear). Mr. Chung changed my paradigm so I have a better perspective of things.

I think the fifth grade play is one of our highlights because we taught a lot of things to our fellow students. It also helped us learn about our history and who we are as Hawaiians. We (wailele) showed different perspectives of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy (haole and Hawaiian).

I would like to remember the things Mr. Chung taught us because it could help me at some point in my life. I would also like to remember how Mr. Chung taught us because it was a different way of teaching that made me more educated. I enjoyed everything that he did with us. Lastly, I would like to thank you, Mr. Chung, for making this 5th grade year the best school year I ever had. :P :)

  9. Spencer Says:

I think my paradigm shifted because in the beginning of the year I didn’t know where Darfur was or what the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was. I never used to think that there were genocides and fights over land. I just thought everybody respected each other. I never really cared about the people in Africa or the Palestinians getting blown up. I also never liked Social Studies because it was so boring, but now I think it is fun. When we talked about WWII, I used to think only of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, that was it, but now I also think of the Holocaust, the Nazis and Adolf Hitler.

I think that that the highlights of the year are D.A.R.E day and our play because our play was so awesome. I also thought that D.A.R.E day was just as awesome as the play.

If I look back at the 5th grade play, I would like to remember all of the history lessons that Mr. Chung taught us and how many times we had to rehearse our lines before we were okay to perform.

  10. Amylyn Says:

My paradigm has shifted many times during the year. For an example, I had no idea that a textbook sometimes has false information and it’s always useful to actually look it up from different resources because there might be different perspectives in each source that you look up. Another thing is that I had never really given any thought to current events happening in the world. One example is the Israeli Palestinian conflict. I seriously had no idea about anything that had to do with that, but my paradigm shifted with that because I just thought everyone that had lived there was satisfied and happy.

I think a highlight, as I think everybody else had said, was D.A.R.E because the D.A.R.E field trip was FANTASTIC!!!!

I’ll look back on the day when Mr. Chung told us about how others have many different perspectives and to always think in more then one way. Also, I will remember compound interest because it’s good to know so you know how to possible become rich in the future.

Thanks for making 5th grade the best year so far!!!
    I learned so much!!

Sayonara minna! Until next year! (and tomorrow through Friday) LOL :)

  11. Maile Says:

One way my paradigm changed was that I always thought that America was the good guy and anyone we fought was bad. Now that I learned to see things from different perspectives, I saw that some of the wars such as the Spanish/American war were unprovoked. Another way my paradigm changed was me believing in textbooks. I used to think that textbooks had the most accurate information, but now I realize that there are a lot of little things that are not true.

I think that one highlight of this year was the algebra. This really helped me with my math skills, I also found that math can be fun. I think that I will be okay in 6th grade because I learned most of the things I am going to work on during my 6th grade year

If I looked back on my 5th grade year, I would like to remember the 5th grade play.

  12. Capri Says:

One of my paradigms that was changed was the one about Christopher Columbus. Before, I used to think that he was a “good” guy because he discovered America. I learned that you should look at different points of view. One of my other paradigms that was changed was not all of our presidents were good, a couple of them were annexationists, and some of them lied and said that there was a treaty of annexation. I also learned that you can’t always believe everything that you hear.

I think that one of the highlights of this year was learning about wars, like learning about the war between the North and the South, and how the South actually wanted the war to happen. The South wanted to have a fight but in the end the North actually won. Another highlight of the year was learning about genocide. Before I had no idea what genocide was. I didn’t know about a lot of things like global warming. Before, I had heard of global warming but I didn’t know what it was. This year I learned about how man is at its darkest hour and we can make it out, if we all tried.

If I looked back at fifth grade, I think that I would remember the new friendships I made this year. Before I actually got to know people, I wasn’t sure if I would actually be their friend or not. Like Amylyn, I didn’t really know her. But after I did get to know her, we became friends. I would also remember my teacher, mostly because he made a difference in my life, and taught me lessons that will help me to become successful one day.

  13. pomaikai Says:

My paradigm has shifted from last year allot because last year we did mostly memorization, spelling, and time tests. But this year we didn’t do time tests or anything and learned allot more. I also learned that you can’t always believe everything that you hear because I used to think that Columbus wasn’t bad. But now I learned all of the bad things that he did to the Native Americans. Last year we did hardly any math or just math timed tests, this year I learned that it’s important to do math because if you know math then you can be successful,

I think that one of the highlights of this year was the d.a.r.e. day because there were so many performances and bright flashing lights, it was cool. I also really liked all of the parties that we had in our class.

If I look back at fifth grade I would like to remember how Mr.Chung taught us algebra. I would also remember the compound interest lesson. I will probably remember the economic system because it was fun and taught us how to save and spent our money wisely.

    See you all next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:):)

  14. cameron Says:

Most of the time when im on the internet i just look for imformation, and when I find the info that im looking for i just stoped looking and believed what was there. Now I check with my source of info, and see if that same info is true according to other sources. Also I learned that sometimes it doesn’t matter wether your smart or not you just need to know how to use the knowledge that you have learned.

I think the best part of 5th grade is still to come, and that is tommorow where were going to spend the whole day at the BEACH!!!!. But so far the best day in 5th grade ever would have to be the Disco dance! I might have said that it was boring, but actually it was pretty fun running away from everyone that I knew! Another highlight was teacher apritiation day! That day I just hung out and did nothing.

The day that I would most like to remember would be when wailele(Dane,Nainoa,Kanoa,Alema,Cameron) challenged the 6th graders and won twice!

  15. Tyanna Says:

My paradigm has shifted now because in the beginning of the year I had always thought that I was american and that genocide was over or had never happened. I was wrong, I’m not saying that being american is bad but I have learned that the way we became american is bad. Also I am not saying that I am only Hawaiian, because I am not but I am saying that I am Hawaiian by blood and American by force.
I have learned that genocide IS happening like in rawanda. It has also happened in the past such as the holocost.

Some of the highlights of this school year was the 5th grade play or the dare class and graduation. I agree with cameron on the beach highlight :) I love the beach so it is going to be really fun.

If I looked back at the fifth grade and remember all the people that I met and how much I learned. So far this grade has been the best so far!!!

  16. alema Says:

Many of my paradigms have changed since the begining of the year. In the begining of the year I thought people that are leaders to others would always tell the truth to the people that looked up to them. But when Mr. Chung gave us the lessons about propaganda and I realized how powerful propaganda was that paradigm totally shifted. Now I look at things with a more critcal eye which is good.

The highlight of the year would be the day Mr. Chung told us to connect the nine dots with one line. Many of us did not understand how to connect the nine dots but when Mr. Chung showed us how to do it and connected it to our lives I was so suprised. From that lesson I learned that I have to go outside of the box which is my paradigm to have a more succsesful life.

The one day of the year I want to remember is when Mr. Chung taught us about compound interest because If I remember that I can make more money in the future.

  17. Evan Says:

Most of my paradigms has changed since the beginning of the year, I could have been possibly completely changed since then. One of my paradigms that have changed is my perspective of the world first of all, secondly making me look up the source of the information I’m being taught to check if other sources have the same answer and lastly don’t give in to propaganda for cigarettes or cigars.

The highlight of this year was the dance because it was a mixture of sports and Hip/hop/jazz/rap. So that is the most fun part of this school year not only because Wilson couldn’t get me while I was dancing but it’s because I learned how to do a coffee grind.

I would like to remember the dance and the mile run and the math (compound intrest).

  18. Wilson Says:

My paradigms changed when we were taught about businesses and history. We learned that history isn’t always about heroes always conquering the challenges they face. Most of those stories are propaganda that are made to erase the flaws that they did to accomplish the challenge. Like how Colombus claimed America, he whipped out thousands of Native Americans that didn’t respect the idea. I’m not saying that all stories are like this, but you have to learn the differences between fact and propaganda. We also learned ways to make money and how to make more off the saved money. Compound interest is when you leave money in a bank and after so many years it adds up to a lot of money.

The highlight of the year for me is when Mr. Chung got me into models because I learned a lot about historic wars and the tanks and other weapons they used. I learned that when you are doing something that is worth the wait your final presentation will have much less flaws within the design. This connects to life because if you rush something most likely you’ll have a crappy product. (Even though I ended up with a glue covered Type 1 Japanese tank that Mr. Chung helped to cover up.)

One of the days I’ll remember is the day we told the rest of the class what we wanted to say before the year ended. What I said was true I hate them all. My reasons why are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to those reasons.
