Piracy in Somalia

Piracy off the Somali coast has been a threat to international shipping since the beginning of Somalia’s civil war in the early 1990s. Since 2005, many international organizations have expressed concern over the rise in acts of piracy. Piracy has contributed to an increase in shipping costs and impeded the deliver of food aid shipments. According to the Kenyan foreign minister, Somali pirates have received over US$150 million during the 12 months prior to November 2008. This problem seems to be getting worse.

What do you think a solution to this growing international could be?

I think that the Somali pirates are attacking ships because they are suffering from poverty and need food, water, and money so they have nothing to lose. I think we can stop this problem by helping the pirates by giving what they need because they are fighting for their survival. If that does not work, then we should have a group of soldiers guard a ship that has to pass by.

I think that a solution to this Somali Pirate situation is to help the place where they come from. The only reason they are attacking ships are because they want things like food, water and money. In Somalia, Africa, all of these things are deprived from them from their government. Like Kanoa said, they have nothing to lose because they have nothing except maybe a gallon of water and a half a slice of bread a day. Americans would never become pirates because firstly, they would lose a lot and secondly, they don’t need anything. If giving them stuff doesn’t work, then we could just send our military in.

Well, I think that we should see why they are attacking and once we find out the problem, we can help them solve it (if they want us to help and there will be no fighting). Well Maile, Americans can become pirates too, to gain money, especially in this economic crisis.

I think the solution to the Somali Pirate situation is that we should give them supplies such as water, food, and shelter. I think that is the greatest way because the Somali Pirates are only attacking these ships because this is what they think they should do to get their everyday necessities. They don’t really care if they die or live because look at them, they are poor and have nothing. America should go capture the Somali Pirates and help them to establish a running government. If the people fight back, I think we should set our ships with guns so the people can protect themselves from the pirates.

  5. Dane Ku Says:

I think the reason they rob ships is because they are poor. I think the solution to the Somali Pirate situation is that we should give them supplies such as water, food, and shelter, give them a lot of money and shut down the people who hire them. Another thing we can do is to let the people on the boat carry weapons. Just make sure they are mentally stable! :)

I think that there are those pirates because they are in the most poor country in the world and they think they have nothing to lose, so why not be pirates. The solution to me is to give them shelter, food, water, money, and a new working government to help them. If that doesn’t work, then we should have like a police on every ship.

They say to look to the past for answers but in this situation we can settle this in a less painful way, and we can save hundreds of lives by settling it in a less painful way.

I think that the Somalians are pirates because they are poor and they are desperate for money and food so they became pirates. I think that the solution to the Somali pirates is that we should help them to have a better government, give them food and water, instead of them having to steal from other people. If we try to help them but they still want to raid our ships, then we need to have some police on board the ships. If the piracy gets really bad, then we can always send the military, but I think that we can solve this problem without the military.

I think this event started when the people can and push the people around so they don’t have any money so they don’t care if they die. It’s just like the phase “one freedom fighter is another person enemy.” I think the Somali pirate is a good person to the country because they are getting money for them.

  9. Morgan Says:

I think a solution to this pirate situation is to take better care of the places that those people come from. The Somalian pirates needed to survive because the government couldn’t support everyone. They were desperate so they began to steal from ships if they didn’t pay a fee to go across “their” oceans. To help we can give them food and water. We can also help their government so the people don’t have to be criminals to survive. They are good people, but the options they have to live are not as big as the ones here.
