I learned that Kane represents Kalo, Ku represents ‘Ulu, Kanaloa represents Mai’a, and Lono represents ‘Uala. I thought it was interesting that these gods represented these things. Therefore, I now want to know why these gods represent these things.
I also learned that the Kumulipo is a very long chant of how everything started. I thought this was interesting because I want know the Hawaiian story of how everything began. I think this is a very big part of Hawaiian history.
If you want to see the kumulipo, go to this website:
http://www.sacred-texts.com/pac/ku/ku31.htm
I think it is important to know your own history because you should be able to know where you came from and what your ancestors did.

I learned that when Hawaii voted on being a state, it was not fair because you only had two choices, either to be a state or not. But either way, America still controlled Hawaii. Even though most of the Hawaiians who were there first wanted to be free and be a nation.
I think that it’s good to know your history because then you know where you come from and you can be proud to say where you come from.

From Dr. Blaisdell’s talk I learned about how the takeover of the Hawaiian Kingdom was a violation of international law. All countries were supposed to be given the choice if they would like to be an independent nation, a part of the country that is controlling them at that time, or if they wanted to be “somewhere in between,” as Dr.Blaisdell explained it. But America didn’t give us that choice. Our chose were to stay the same as a territory or be a part of America.
Another thing I learned was our connection to our ancestors, descendants, and our mothers. The first piko is the regular piko that connects us with our Mothers, and the second piko is the piko po’o, the soft spot on our head that connects us with our ancestors. The last piko is the Piko ma’i. This is the piko at the privite part which connects us with our decendants.
I think it is important to learn about our own history because the history of the Hawaiians is dying, and we need to build and revive our culture especially while we are young so that when we grow up, we can do something about it.

A few things I learned is…
1. I learned America illegally took over Hawaii because countries are supposed to make their own choices and those choices are be an independent nation, be with a certain country, or be somewhere in-between, but when Hawaii was to become a state, America gave the people two choices, you become a state or you stay how you are as a territory.
2.I learned that Hawaiians believed in many different gods and most of the gods didn’t just have one specialty, they controlled many different things.
I think it is important to know your own history because it shows you what the generations before you did and could give you some inspiration for what you could do in the future.

The first thing I learned is the three pikos. One is on your head, one is your stomach piko, and the last is your private.
Another thing that I learned is that the Hawaiians didn’t get to choose for their freedom, they only had two options which were statehood or to stay a teritory or something.
I think it is important to learn history because it shows us what past generations did, and that can help us in the present and the future. Like someone said, the past is the key to everything.

I learned that kumulipo is an oli that tells the Hawaiian creation story. I find this interesting and also something you would need to know because it was and still is an important part of Hawaiian history. It is like the Christian creation story that believes God is the creator but just the Hawaiian version of that story.
Another thing that Dr. Blaisdell said that I did not know was that there was supposed to be a vote for Hawaii on if they wanted to be independent, become a state, or somewhere in the middle. I was shocked to hear this because it was so weird to think that if we wanted to be independent we could have been according to international law. This is something that I think more people should be aware of.
It is important to know your history because if there is something that you think should not have happened, you can make sure it does not happen ever again. Another reason that you should know your history is that if somebody ever tries to change it, people will know that it is not the truth.

I learned about the three pikos. I think that this is interesting because your piko holds your genes and you can find out who you are related to and how. Another thing that I learned was that the cops that were hired to take the people off the roof were kanaka maoli. I find that interesting because they took the money instead of walking away. They thought that the money was more important than what the other kanaka maoli wanted. It shows how greedy and selfish they were.
It is important to know your history because you can find out who your ancestors were. You can also track back your history to who you were related to. If you know your history and you track it back to someone, they could possibly be a Hawaiian ali‘i or a kahuna of an ali‘i.

I learned a lot from Dr. Blaisdell, but one of the things I learned about were the three picos. I thought it was very interesting because one of your pico holds something that makes you connected to your ancestors. I think this is something that everyone should know about because it tells you where you came from, and all the other things like your genes and your history.
Another thing that I learned is that Lili‘uokalani was a very good composer. I think that is fascinating because it shows how she was related to her ancestors because a lot of her kupuna were very good at music. She is such a good composer that we still sing her songs today to learn more about her. I play the piano so I really want to learn one of her songs on the piano and to tell the story behind it.
It is important to learn your history because you know were you came from and if someone tries to tell you false information then you know the real truth to your history, also so you do not believe a lie. That’s why the Americans tried to take away the Hawaiian Language first because the most destructive thing you can do to a culture is take away their language.

One thing I learned two days ago is that before Hawaii became a state, there was a vote. That vote was not fair to the Hawaiian people. There were supposed to be 3 choices, “Independence, Annexation, or Keep it as it is.” Instead, there were only 2 choices and they were unfair. Stay a territory or statehood. Of course, statehood is the best choice.
Another thing I learned today is that we have representatives that we eat for Hawaiian gods. One example is uala for Lono. I never thought that Hawaiian gods represented things that we eat.
It is important to know our history because maybe one day when the whole world loses interest in capturing Hawaii, we could use our history to back us when we want to be independent.

I learn what the three pikos. One is the regular piko, the two other are on the head and in your private part.
Another thing I learnd is that the Hawaiians didn’t get to vote for their freedom and I think that’s unfair, don’t you?
It is good to know my culture because then I can really feel like I’m a true Kanaka Maoli.

I learned that there was a declaration by the United Nations that no one knew about until 4 or 5 years later. The Americans didn’t want people to know about it because they would protest and the Hawaiians would fight for their country. The Americans were against the law so they minimized the choices to have their way in Hawaii staying part of the United States.
Another thing I learned is that the Hawaiians eat their aumakua so they kind of become godly.
One last thing that I learned is that we have three pikos, our head which makes us remember our ancestors, our piko on our tummy which helps us remember our mommy, and our area which connects us to our descendants.
March 14th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
One thing I learned is that Kane represents Kalo, Ku represents ulu, Kanaloa Maia, and Lono Uala. The onee thing I want to learn is why do they represent these plants. The second thing I learned is that during the time from the overthrow to the day of statehood, the Americans committed many illegal acts. If these illegal events never happened, then we would still be the kingdom of Hawaii with its own monarch.
In my opinion, I think it is important to know your own history because it may have a way of helping you in the future. Also, it helps to know your roots and ancestors.
March 14th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
One thing I learned from Doctor Blaisdell is that there are three pikos. One piko is your belly-button which connects you to your mother. The other piko is your brain which connects you to your ancestors. The last piko is the one that is between your legs and connects you to the future generations. This information is important to me because I can connect to my history and my family’s past using the three pikos.
Another thing I learned from Doctor Blaisdell was that each Hawaiian god represented something, like Lono represented uala. This is important to my history because my ancestors believed in this. There were certain ways that they followed.
March 14th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
It is important to know your history because we can learn from our ancestor’s mistakes and not make them again.
March 15th, 2009 at 10:23 am
I learned that there was a lot of propaganda in Hawaii at the time of the overthrow. For example, they made Queen Lili‘uokalani look like a savage beast, which basically made Hawaiians in general look like savages.
I think that it’s important to know our history so that we can prevent anything bad that has happened and we can be prepared. Also, we can take examples in our history that were good and stick to them when we really need it. For example, Hawaii was taken over by the U.S.A., and maybe if another country comes again, we’ll be prepared to defend ourselves.
March 15th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
I learned that Hawaii’s annexation was a violation of international law and that it was illegal, but no Americans cared because they wanted more land. All countries are supposed to be able to choose if they want to be independent or not.
I think it is important to know your own history so that we can stop anything bad from happening or anyone taking advantage of us.
March 15th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Firstly, I learned that America broke international law by taking over Hawaii. Hawaii should have three options, to become an independent place, stay with the United States, or somewhere in-between. Instead, America never gave Hawaii a choice.
I learned that there was a lot of propaganda. Mr. Chung showed cartoons showing pictures of Lili‘uokulani that made the Hawaiians look like cannibals and savages.
It’s important to know your own history because people can just tell you what they want, and since they may be your elders, you are going to listen to them. So if you know your own history, you can make decisions for yourself if something is true or false, instead of just listening to one person and having them control you.
March 15th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
One of the things I learned from Dr. Blaisdell was that in newspapers all over America, propaganda was brainwashing people. When Hawaii became a state, he showed us a picture of Hawaiians welcoming the Americans with a lei at Iolani Palace. What was really going on were loads and loads of protests. The Hawaiians were not happy to be a state nor a territory. We were furious with what was happening to our kingdom.
I also learned that not only was the overthrow of Hawaii against American laws, but a violation of international laws. America has broken laws that could’ve led to the destruction of Hawaii’s people and America’s people. It sounds like they cared more about expanding than their safety.
It’s important to know your own history because if something like discrimination pops up again you will be able to stop it before it gets big. You will also be able to think and not make the same mistake that you or others did before.
March 15th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
When Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell talked to us, one thing that I learned was about the three Pikos and how they connect you to your ancestors. Another interesting thing that I learned was that the Hawaiian people weren’t allowed to vote for their kingdom. The Hawaiians were thought of as evil naked savages so the Americans (who were supposed to be our friends) didn’t let the Hawaiians vote because they knew if the Hawaiians voted then they wouldn’t get Hawaii.
It is important to know our own history because if you have to prove that the Hawaiians were illegally annexed and you don’t know your history, nobody will believe you.
March 15th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
I learned that everyone has three pikos. One is on your po`o or your top of your head and that piko connects to your ancestors. I think this piko connects you to your ancestors because it is the highest part of your body and your ancestors are in heaven which is very high. The second piko is your normal piko on your stomach which connects you to your mother, probably because that’s the place that you were born in, in your mom’s stomach. The third one is in between the top of your legs which connects you to the future.
I also learned that Kumulipo is a chant that tells the story of Hawai`i.
It is important to know our history so that if we go through situations similar to the ones we can remember to not make the same mistakes.
March 18th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
One of the things that I learned is the way the Hawaiians protested annexation. They had rallies, meetings and denied the racist and provoking propaganda that Americans were feeding to the children of America. America made Liliuokalani look like a savage plotting to destroy the U.S.
Another thing I learned about is the 3 pikos. There is one on the top of your head, one on your stomach and one between your legs. This is important because you are not just learning what others think but how your body is.
It is important to learn about this because the Hawaiians were very insulted by these types of propaganda and we have a right to know about it.
