Kamilo Nui Face Future
I am a Hawai’i Kai Kamilo Nui Customer who wants Kamilo Nui Farm in business because they have fresh affordable produce unlike most stores.
Without the farm how are we supposed to feed the community without breaking the bank in these tough economic times? KS is taking away important agricultural land that is the only working farm in the area of Hawai‘i Kai.
Kamehameha Schools may say “We need to be flexible these farmers have been on this land for more than 3 decades with the same low rent. We need to make money to support our schools education.” Sure the School needs to support the keki’s education, but taking away the Hawaiian farmers homes is not a way to start. We need to stop ruining the careers of many Hawaiian farmers.
If KS and the community were in the court the community would say “ We have been going to this farm for a long time and even though this may benefit out keki the leaders of tomorrow we still need to keep our culture alive.” We have a choice.
How can we now afford our food and protect the Hawaiian Culture? We the community of Hawai‘i Kai have a big problem on our hands and it is up to us to stop it. Kamilo Nui has been feeding us for more than 30 years. You can save money get great food and save the environment.
We have a financial crisis on our hands! With Kamilo Nui up and running we have an easier way to deal with money problems with the excellent prices for fresh produce.
LETS SAVE THIS FARM FROM A HORRIBLE FATE!

The side I pick are for the farmers because without farmers there is no fresh produce and no Hawai‘i animals to eat. The farmers are like gods because you take away gods you have no hope in any thing you do or say. Even if the farmers pay the same rent the school will still try to raise the rent for the farmers.
Some of my facts and ides are the farmers have been paying the same rent for 30years and only now they raise the rent. Why can’t the school give 1 quarter of the 87 acres of land to the farmers to let them grow the produce and animals they were growing for 30years. The farmers should just keep doing what they do best and ignore the school.
The farmers are going against kamehameha schools. Some of the facts are… they have fresh produce and native animals but no money to pay so if they make money why donʻt they pay higher rents.
Kamehameha schools are saying they need money for education. They want this because they want more students to come and learn Hawai‘i education.
I Anthony Keawe am trying to stop my school from raising the rent. If kamehameha was alive he will give them land without paying rent then it is fair. The farmers have taking care of that so if you agree with me thank you. Have you learn anything about the farmers that are suffering. So thank you.

Over the last few years, there has been a problem in Kalama valley. Farmers are struggling to protect their land, Kamehameha schools is planing to raise their rent, developers are swarming around Kalama valley and environmentalists are trying to get the forest back. It's very crazy over there and somebody needs to help the people at Kalama valley.
As I was saying, there is total chaos in Kalama valley. With that comes different prospectives. The farmers say that they have been here for 30 years and they have grown fresh vegetables that their family eats every day. Kamehameha schools say that they ned to start taking responsibility for Pauahi's money so future generations can get a good education, too. The developers say that they could get jobs for other and they could get homes for families to live in. The environmentalists say that Kalama valley would look a lot better if the forest is re-grown and healthy. So, what I'm traing to say is, it might be hard for the different groups to "work it out" and make everybody happy at the same time.
If I could, I would try to make everybody get what they want, but I don't have that type of power. I just hope the people at Kalama valley can do it them selves. It would of been better if this had never started. But it did, and now the people at Kalama valley need to deal with it.

There is a huge fight about land today. The community wants to keep the farms so they can buy crops for good costs. Kamehameha Schools wants to raise the farmers rents, since they have been paying a lower rent than everyone else for over 30 years. The farmers do not have enough money to pay rent, but if they don't pay rent than Kamehameha will take back their land. The developers want to build something on the farmers land.No one knows what to do or whose side to be on. But I agree with the community for several reasons.
The first reason that I agree with the community is that the economy is bad. Prices in markets are going up and the community would like fresh crops, compared to shipped crops for a good cost.I feel the same way. My family owns a farm and I get fresh crops for free, instead of shipped crops for high prices. If the people who owned the land were to take it away,I would be very mad. Another reason I agree with the community is that it will cause traffic. Everyone is so caught up in going to the newest places or buying the newest things, everyone will pile up to get in(if the developers built something on the land).
I know that the farmers have been paying a lower rent than everyone for over 30 years, but they provide fresh food for good prices. They are unselfish. It is not fair to them to make the rent higher. Kamehameha Schools know that the farmers are unable to pay their rent but still, the demand for more money. Kamehameha probably needs more money or they are mad that the farmers aren't paying as much as everyone else. The community think of farmers as unselfish people, so they would like to keep farms in place.
Who cares about money, food is more important. Although the economic system is bad, food and crops are more important to the community. If Kamehameha takes back the land, the farmers won't have a job for a while, and the community will not have fresh crops for a while. Just think about how they feel. You could build an educational building on the land but I myself believer that land and water are more important that education. But if I need to destroy a beautiful land for education the NO THANKS!

Did you ever experience the backbreaking work the farmers experience? Did you know that they do this extremely hard work, therefore keeping Kamilo Nui alive and green? I think the farmers should be able to continue their work in Kamilo Nui. They produce fresh food for us to eat. They keep this area from turning
dry and dead. They do so much for us, yet we don't even know it.

Imagine... acres of lush green forest, bright foods, our native plants and animals thriving. Now imagine the sound of traffic, plants, withered and dead, and no animal cries anywhere. Which one sounds better? The first one right? If KS gets the land, if will never look like that again. It will be horrible, like the second. I don't want this to happen, it will be way more different from now.
We will never hear the sweet sounds of birds again. We will never see any of the green native plants again. Nobody wants that right?

I really hope that the farmers can stay and farm. The farmers make this world a better place for all of us!!! Will you be on the farmers side, preserving Hawai'i? Or will you support KS, destroying the place so many of us love? We need you to support the Kamilo Nui farmers, so they can continue the work they love.

In the very back of Hawaii Kai is the serene valley of Kamilo Nui.At the bottom of that valley is where I live with my family and the tranquil farmers of Kamilo Nui Farm. Hi! My name is Keolanui and I am a Hawaiian Farmer for Kamilo Nui and I believe that Kamehameha Schools shouldn't raise our rent because we may not be able to pay the very high cost.
Have you ever thought about what we do with the land? We provide produce for the local people in Hawaii Kai,keep Native Hawaiian practices, and keep the land lush and bountiful. Kamehameha Schools just wants to make more money by raising our rent dramatically.

Our opponent on this issue is Kamehameha Schools and they want to raise our rent. They say that we've been living on our land for about 40 years with a very low rent. They need to keep up with the modern day rent rates. They also say they need more money to continue Pauahi's legacy and provide for the haumana.

We say that they should choose to keep our rent that price until 2025. The money back then was less valuable then than now. What happened to all of that money everyone says you have?

Now you know the two sides of the story. Keeping the farmers on this land is valuable. I want to teach my family how to farm this land.

How would you feel if someone lived on the land you owned and paid the same low rent for 30 years? Well Kamehameha Schools is in this position with the Kamilo Nui farmers. They have been paying that low rent and we have to do something about it! We need to use the great princess Pauahi’s money wisely and we need to do something about it. So, we raised the rent and now they are complaining that they can’t pay it. Maybe they can work with star market to be able to get more money, or find another way. If they can’t pay us then we will make homes and jobs for the people. This way we can all make the better of this bad economy and all live in peace. Maybe they can start growing more Hawaiian plants.

Kamilo Nui Faces The Future

I’m a land manager working for Kamehameha Schools, and I think this is a great opportunity to do the right thing for everybody involved. I would like to raise the rent of Kamilo Nui, so that Kamehameha Schools can endure educating the keiki of Hawaii. As a land manager I have a kuleana to malama as well as make the pono decision. If we don’t get the money we need we will suffer as the economy goes down we have been giving a very low rent to these farmers and if we want to outlast the economy we need to raise this rent.
Our challenger wants us to leave them how they are and let them continue to sell fresh fruits, vegetables, and plants. “ We are serving the ahupua’a of Hawaii kai! Let us stay!” Although they provide Hawaii kai with fresh foods at a low price, I know we can too but we would bring us back to “old Hawaii” and grow Kalo, ‘Uala and Ulu; live off the land. I believe that we have every right to raise the rent! (But I know it has to be reasonable!)

I’m a land manager working for Kamehameha Schools, and I think this is a great opportunity to do the right thing for everybody involved.
Did you know that your local Kamilo Nui farmers have been causing Kamehameha Schools to lose money for over 30 years? I am a Kamehameha student (proud to be one) supporting the Kamehameha perspective of the Kamilo Nui farmers paying such a low rent (compared to the rent other people of today’s economy are paying to use property) and Kamehameha Schools haven’t raised the amount that the farmers have been paying (not one cent, SERIOUSLY!) I think that we need to raise the rent that the farmers pay to stay on Princess Pauahi’s land because we are losing money and quickly too!

Some of the reasons that Kamehameha Schools have been considering raising the amount that the Kamilo Nui farmers pay are; we are losing money (due to the farmers paying low rent for 39 years, specifically 1970-2009), the farmers are violating the contract that they signed to stay on our founder’s land, it said that they farm on our land not hunt! And guess what, yup they hunt the pua‘a on Kamehameha’s land, causing the population of the pua‘a to shrink (if Kamehameha Schools doesn’t have enough money to educate tomorrow’s leaders, than the future won’t be any better than it is now… and right now things aren’t so neat and dandy).

The Kamilo Nui farmers might say that Kamehameha Schools didn’t lease the land for a low price; they might say that we didn’t give them a lot of land; they might even suggest that they didn’t know that they weren’t allowed to hunt on that land; but that is not true.

I am 100% sure that Kamehameha Schools leased the land to them for a low price (even though I do not know exactly what that price is, I am 100% sure that it’s low). We gave the Kamilo Nui farmers a lot of land to use (farm on).

Compromising would be awesome to consider because technically both sides win. So I’ve came up with an awesome compromise; Kamehameha can raise rent 5% yearly and the farmers can raise the price of the crops by 5% per 2 months, I’ll say that that’s a pretty good compromise. You can help out by heading down to Kamilo Nui Valley and buying some of their delicious bok choi! ☺
