Darfur-A Genocide We Can Stop

The War in Darfur (called by some, including the American Government, the Darfur Genocide) is a military conflict in the Darfur region of western Sudan. The current lines of conflict are seen to be ethnic and tribal, rather than religious.  The conflict began in February of 2003.

The deadly carnage in Darfur, Sudan, for example, which is almost always discussed in political and military terms, has roots in an ecological crisis directly arising from climate shocks.
Jeffrey Sachs, economist

Darfur provides a case study of how existing marginal situations can be exacerbated beyond the tipping point by climate-related factors. It also shows how lack of essential resources threatens not only individuals and their communities but also the region and the international community at large.
Think-Tank, CNA Corporation

Amid the diverse social and political causes, the Darfur conflict began as an ecological crisis, arising at least in part from climate change.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

What can we learn from the crisis in Darfur, Sudan occuring now?

What can we personally do about this situation?

  1. Arielle Taramasco Says:

From the crisis that is happeing in Sudan, we can learn many things. We can learn that nobody cares about the poor people that are dying in Africa. They don’t care enough to even know that it is a genocide. We also learn that even if we know it is a genocide, we are always waiting for someone else to take care of it. That shows that we are lazy, and always wait for someone else to do the job for you, even if you know there is a terrible happening going on. You don’t want to make a difference in the world, even if the world will praise you for your wonderful deed.

To make a difference, we can get off our lazy bottoms and couches and make a difference. We can do this by possibly making a fundraiser or garage sale, and raise money for all the people dying in the Sudan. I know this will make a difference because sometimes, things can be the most preventable things in the world, but we think that it is not and we focus on less important things. We can raise a few dollars and it will help nearly ten men, women and children who are dying in the Sudan. That was just like Rwanda when they had their genocide. Many people say that it was the most prevantable genocide of all time. What if this genocide is the same? There are a lot of things that we can do that we don’t realize we can do. That is why we don’t make an effort in the first place. So get rid of that attitude: “I know that is terrible, what is happening in Africa but let me finish my Wii or my DS, or even finish watching my TV show.” If America really cares about charity and the starving kids in the world, why doesn’t America talk about Africa for once? America doesn’t focus on the most important things first most of the time. For proof, on the front page of the newspaper, we see news about super-stars, and not Africa. Africa isn’t even mentioned at all in the newspaper. That is why people need to show the terrible things happening in the world.

  2. Kealani Browne Says:

Like Arielle says, we can learn many things from the genocide in Darfur. Many people don’t realize that the crisis is happening right now, the birth of a genocide. They won’t do anything to prevent genocide from happening and they won’t do anything until it is to late. We are always talking about how wonderful America is. America this, America that, oh, America gave 3 billion dollars to charity. If America really cares, they would send the Air Force, Marines, Navy, the whole military over to Sudan right now and stop this crisis before it becomes worse and thousands of innocent people lose their lives. If we don’t do anything about this, America is a lie. We lie and say we care about the people in Sudan and around the world. That is a very big lie. All we care about is our wii’s, d.s., game boy and television. We need to get up and make an effort. We can’t be lazy and procrastinate about this type of thing. People need our help right now and they are crying out for someone to come and help but we ignore them. During the genocide in Rwanda, the Tutsis pleaded for the U.N. to help them but we ignored them. We call ourselves heroes when we are not. This just comes to show you how lazy and ignorant we are. This is why we need to show world news in newspapers and not Brittany Spears or some other super-star like Hannah Montana.

  3. Casey Says:

From the crisis in Sudan, we can learn innumerable lessons. For example, we learned that people don’t care about the poor people in Africa suffering from genocides and starvation. It just really bothers me that no one cares. Is it because they are a different color than us or what is it? They need our help but we are too lazy to do something. There is a genocide that is going on and we don’t care! Thousands of people are going to die and we don’t care! Are we waiting for someone else to do the job because we are too lazy? I don’t really know but we better start changing our attitude now or thousands of people are going to die. We really need to start helping Africa. If we help them now they could pay us back when we have any problems with other countries. Can’t people see how bad the genocide was in Rwanda? Or did they know but not care? We could be saving thousands of lives right now but instead we want to help pretty much every other country in the world except Africa which is the place that really needs our help.

Another thing that I learned from the crisis in Sudan is that when people get desperate, they follow anybody. For example, there is a family in Africa and they have no food, no water, and no shelter. There is a war going on in their country. One side says if you join in our army we will give you food, water, and shelter. They are desperate why would they say no? If I were in their situation, I would join the army’s side to get food, water and shelter. When you are desperate you do some outrageous things, such as being a suicide bomber. People would want to become suicide bombers because their life is so bad they just can’t handle it anymore.

I personally think that we should write letters to the United Nations or at least try to get our letter in the newspaper. I think we should write letters because our writing skills have become really gratifying and it might actually persuade some people. Another option is to protest but it is not as satisfying because we are only protesting in Hawai’i (which can still make a difference). If we send it to United Nations, it will be more worldwide.

  4. Rachel Says:

We can learn how horrible wars can be, especially genocides. People say that we can learn from mistakes, but right we are not learning. We should be remembering the genocide that happened in Africa with the Hutus and Tutsi tribes. It was terrifying, mostly because no other countries helped. Is that what people want to repeat? We need to act now, before it’s too late.

We should all right letters to governments, both the U.S. and world-wide. If others see how concerned we are, maybe something good will happen. Also, we need to stop being mean to each other, so no more wars will start.

  5. Taylor Takeda Says:

We can learn that when a country gets desperate it will follow whoever promises them jobs, food, money, and something to live for. We can also learn that one person can change the world and how we think. One example of one person changing the world and changing how we think is Adolf Hitler. Hitler was the person who made the Germans think that the Jews where less then human beings. He told them that Jews shouldn’t be with the rest of them. Then he got greedy and wanted to have power over the world.

The thing we can do are to raise awareness about what is happening in Darfur, Sudan is we can raise money for goods or things that the people in Darfur can use, like food or other goods that they might want.

  6. Traci Aiwohi Says:

What we can learn from the crisis in Sudan is that people don’t realize that a genocide is about to happen. Some people are desperate and will do and follow whoever gives then an opportunity to have a life. I think that we can learn that not only the people from Africa, but in other states and countries there are people who aren’t getting treated like normal people should be treated. When people have nothing to live for they feel that they should do extreme things and that could be life threatening to themselves and other people. The people in Sudan are going through a hard time and this could become a genocide. I still can’t believe that people are still doing these kinds of horrible things to innocent men, women, and children.

We can help these kinds of problems by writing letters to the government saying that we need to help these people. We need to help other people to see the horrible things that are happening to our world. Another thing we can to to help save these people is to raise money and support. I think that the government should tell all the schools to teach these kinds of issues so others can become aware about the things that are happening in the world so they could also help.

Part of this crisis is our fault. People don’t notice that when we pollute the air, our ozone layer gets thinner and thinner and that starts Global Warming. When global warming happens it causes the climate to dramatically change. This could lead to drought and other causes. If a drought happens, people can’t survive and that’s when people get desprate.

  7. Kamalani Says:

One thing that we can learn from the crisis in Darfur, Sudan is that only some people see that a genocide is about to happen. Not many people can tell. We don’t act on helping to stop genocide until it has already happened and it has gotten terrible. People cannot see these things coming. That is why genocides happen. Genocides happen because we don’t do anything to prevent it. Sometimes we see it coming head on, but we don’t try to stop it. We just let it go right past us. Thinking of genocide, you would never think that it would happen at this time because we are civilized. Some people are so desperate for food, water and shelter for themselves and their family that they would follow anyone that would get them those things, not thinking of what and how much they are taking from other people. It seems like genocides and other conflicts usually happen in Africa. This is because the land is very dry and the loss of water is extreme. When you lose water in your land area, you cannot grow any food or drink any water. You need water to live. That is usually when genocide happens. It happens because the loss of water makes people desperate to take and not think about what they are doing. One person might have an idea and everyone might follow even though it turns into genocide. People in power won’t notice that they are doing something extremely bad because that is what everyone wants, power, even after things that happened like with the Tutsis and the Hutus in Rwanda. When you are desperate, you cannot stop your actions from doing something outrageous.

We can prevent these problems by writing letters to the Mayor and the President, telling them that we can see genocide about to happen in Darfur, Sudan. Although they might think that we are just 5th graders we can still make a difference in the world. Think about all the people who made a difference even as a child. Take Benjamin Franklin for example, he made many useful inventions that are still used today that were invented when he was a child barely older then us. That proves that even we can make a difference.

  8. Evan Tengan Says:

From the tragic event in Darfur we can learn that you should keep the land clean and try not to pollute the Earth as much as we regularly do everyday, even though everytime a genocide happens some type of race is blamed.

I can write an article for the newspaper or write a persuasive argument to the U.N. I could create a group that could write, protest, draw, and persuade the world to change their paradigm.

This might happen to us someday. We all might be the ones that get killed in genocide if we are the ones who are blamed for dragging the other races down.

  9. kellie Says:

I think that we can learn that we should be thankful for what we have because the children and adults in Sudan don’t have enough food or resources to make the food that they need. The crisis in Darfur, Sudan is a real issue, well at least for the people who live there. As for us, here in the U.S., we don’t care about this issue. This is probably because not a lot of people learned about the things happening in this part of the world. I think that if more people knew about these kind of problems around the world, we could educate others.

Honestly, I think that we could write letters to the Unitedd Nations. Maybe they might like them, and try to help us fix the problems that we want to fix but can’t on our own. If we could, I would do anything that I can to fix these problems WORLDWIDE. The children in Sudan deserve way more than they are getting right now.

  10. Taylor Maihui Says:

I think that we can learn that we are fortunate to have food, shelter, and clothes on our back. We are fortunate to have natural resources, and we have to take care of it. We can also learn how these types of crisis start. They start when people don’t have enough resources so they end up fighting for it. We can also learn that we need to recycle so that America doesn’t run out of resources and starts to fight like the Israelites and the Palestinians. When I learned about this for the first time, it made me realize what this world could turn into if we don’t change our way of living fast. This topic can teach a lot of people what will happen if we continue to keep on wasting our resources.

I can personally help this cause by writing to the President or the United Nations. If they get that letter, and understand what I said and agree with me, I think that there could be a chance of the problem being fixed. If I wrote to the United Nations or to the President, I would tell them why this problem probably happened. I would also tell him that if we don’t start recycling and try to stop global warming, our planet could come to an end. I would also inform him that genocide could start in the United States because we waste our resources. Even though the majority of the people around the world don’t care about the poor starving people in Africa, we should do something about them. I have proof that the United States doesn’t care about the people in Africa. If you look in the newspaper tomorrow, you won’t see one article about what is happening in Darfur, Sudan or what happened in Rwanda. To me we should send some U.S troops to Africa to stop this problem instead of sending all of them to Iraq.

You know, when I went to the Iolani carnival I saw a handful of students walking around with T-shirts that said Save Sudan. Do you remember the video we saw and it said if you buy a T-shirt the money will go to Sudan. Well, it was so cool. They were all walking around with their T-shirts to help a cause. I wish we could do something like that.

  12. T.K. Kaitoku Says:

After seeing what happened in Rwanda, I thought that the U.N would pay more attention to genocide. As we are able to stop this one, I think that we should stop it in the beginning and not to wait for 1,000,000 people to die. We are now paying the price of all the errors that early “discoverers” made about conquering nations, and switching people who were at peace and putting them in another country where there is another nation that they are at war with. Now they are killing each other because of the past. I don’t know how the U.N is going to handle this, but I hope that they handle it in a good way and not make the situation worse. :(
