Social Studies Writing Rubric
There are several types of writing:
Sensory/Descriptive-The writer presents a picture with words.
Ex. Popcorn/Light and airy/Pops and bursts in hot oil/It’s tasty with butter and salt/Yummy!
Imaginative/Narrative-The writer tells a real or imaginary story.
Ex. Once there was a little gray kitten who couldn’t meow. All the other cats in the litter tried to teach it to meow, but they had no luck. Then one day the little kitten opened its mouth and out came the loveliest sound it had ever heard–Quack, Quack.
Practical/Informative-The writer presents basic information (who, what, where, when) clearly.
Ex. A fish is an animal that lives in water and breathes through gills. It has a backbone. Most fish have fins are covered with scales, and are cold-blooded.
Analytical/Expository-The writer tries to analyze, explain (why important), and persuade.
Ex. I think Thomas Jefferson was a very important man. He wrote the Declaration of Independence and later became the third President of the United States. He was a champion of liberty.
In this class you will be doing a lot of the last two types of writing. You will be graded on how well you present basic information on a topic and then explain the significance of it. We will be using the following writing rubric which focuses a lot on analysis of the resources you use.
