{"id":366,"date":"2009-08-17T13:32:18","date_gmt":"2009-08-17T23:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/aahirano\/?p=366"},"modified":"2009-08-17T13:32:18","modified_gmt":"2009-08-17T23:32:18","slug":"to-celebrate-or-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/aahirano\/2009\/08\/17\/to-celebrate-or-not\/","title":{"rendered":"To celebrate or not?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>August 21, 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Hawai\u2018i&#8217;s statehood.\u00a0 How should Hawai\u2018i celebrate this milestone, or should we even celebrate?<\/p>\n<p>To deal with this issue the State of Hawai\u2018i has decided to hold a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiistatehoodconference.com\/\">Statehood Conference<\/a>, instead of the typical fanfare of parades, concerts and fireworks.\u00a0 This event will mark this momentous occasion with keynote speakers, break out workshop, plenary session and an evening event with a 50&#8217;s theme.<\/p>\n<p>The conference schedule includes the following (taken from the conference website):<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Opening Ceremony \u2013 <em>New Horizons for the Next 50 Years<\/em><\/div>\n<div>\n<dl>\n<dd>Opening Prayer\/Chant\/Anthems; Honoring \u201c50 Voices\u201d<\/dd>\n<dd>Opening Remarks: Governor Linda Lingle, State of Hawai\u2018i<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<dl>\n<dt>Keynote Remarks by Special Guests \u2013 Hawai\u2018i\u2019s Present and Future from Local and National Perspectives<\/dt>\n<dd>An overview of who we are as a state, where we need to go to ensure our future success and how we will get there!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bryan Clay, 2008 Decathlon Gold Medalist<\/li>\n<li>Andy Karsner, former assistant secretary, U.S. Department of Energy<\/li>\n<li>John Zogby, political pollster, Zogby International<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/dd>\n<dd>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<div>Morning Plenary Session \u2013 <em>Hawai\u2018i&#8217;s 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century Global Economy<\/em><\/div>\n<div>\n<dl>\n<dd>From statehood to the Asia-Pacific century, visionary leaders in Hawai\u2018i community will present an overview of where we are as a state and where we are heading.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tom Coffman, An Overview of Hawai\u2018i\u2019s Past and Present<\/li>\n<li>Charles Morrison, President, East-West Center<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Mason, Sang-Hyop Lee, and Gerard Russo , Department of Economics, University of Hawai\u2018i at M\u0101noa, <em>Hawai\u2018i\u2019s Economic Challenges in an Aging World<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<dl>\n<dt>Hawai\u2018i Stamp Unveiling<\/dt>\n<dd>In coordination with the U.S. Postal Service, Governor Lingle will help to unveil the official State of Hawai\u2018i commemorative stamp. Hawai\u2018i\u2019s stamp design was created by local artist Herb Kane of the Big Island. However, it is important that through collaborative efforts and working in harmony with each other, we can exemplify the &#8220;Aloha Spirit&#8221; and its inherent message of embracing peace over conflict.<\/dd>\n<dd>\n<\/dd>\n<dd>Featured entertainers include Keola and Moanalani Beamer, Raiatea Helm, Natalie Ai Kamauu, Geoffrey Keezer, Charles Kaupu, Bernice Hirai, and the Chamber Music Hawaii Spring Wind Quintet. Halau Hula Olana will feature hula performed by our keiki, who represent the generation that will inherit and lead Hawai\u2018i in the next 50 years.<\/dd>\n<dd>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Commemoration reception and special 50&#8217;s evening entertainment\/party with THE famous PLATTERS, THE COASTERS AND THE DRIFTERS<\/p>\n<p>There has been some criticism claiming a lack of Hawaiian perspective on the day&#8217;s events an workshops.\u00a0 The focus of the day is heavy on the economic future of Hawai\u2018i as seen from a tourist business lens.\u00a0 Although this is the majority of what people expect when visiting Hawai\u2018i, there are many still who want the real Hawai\u2018i &#8211; not the hotel l\u00fc\u2018au and hula show (which a lot of the time has very little hula in it).<\/p>\n<p>Even after 50 years what are we, the state of Hawai\u2018i, doing to honor this place, its history and its people?
