{"id":359,"date":"2009-08-06T13:41:14","date_gmt":"2009-08-06T23:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/aahirano\/?p=359"},"modified":"2009-08-06T13:58:35","modified_gmt":"2009-08-06T23:58:35","slug":"ka%e2%80%98upulehu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/aahirano\/2009\/08\/06\/ka%e2%80%98upulehu\/","title":{"rendered":"Ka\u2018\u00fcp\u00fclehu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we start a new school year, we are always looking at building our capacity in Nohona Hawai\u2018i.\u00a0 This year was no different.<\/p>\n<p>The first day back for the teachers, Monday August 3, lent itself for a staff huaka\u2018i for the high school.\u00a0 This huaka\u2018i took the group to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourseasons.com\/hualalai\/\">Four Seasons at Hual\u00e4lai<\/a>.\u00a0 Sure it sounds like a leisure day of relaxing at one of Hawai\u2018i&#8217;s premier resorts, but this was not in the plans.<\/p>\n<p>Once there, the group gathered at the resort&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourseasons.com\/hualalai\/ka_upulehu_cultural_center\/\">cultural center<\/a> for ho\u2018okipa protocols.\u00a0 After being welcomed in by the resort&#8217;s Director of culture center Uncle Earl Regidor, the staff was divided into two groups.\u00a0 One group stayed in the culture center for an informal talk story session with Uncle Earl and his experiences there at Four Seasons as well as his past teaching gigs with Kamehameha.\u00a0 Within the culture center are original works by <a href=\"http:\/\/herbkaneart.com\/homepage.html\">Herb Kawainui K\u00e4ne<\/a> depicting life at a shoreline community during traditional times.\u00a0 The stories woven into each of these are as important as the paintings themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The second group toured the aquaculture and restoration efforts of the resort led by <strong>David Chai (&#8217;78)<\/strong>, director of natural resources.\u00a0 The resort houses both contemporary and traditional fishponds that are being managed to supply some the resorts fresh fish needs.\u00a0 Some of the highlights of this part of the huaka\u2018i were the tanks of \u00e4holehole, moi, \u2018awa and even \u2018ulua (which the Science &amp; Natural Resources, Arts &amp; Communications, and Health &amp; Wellness academies were able to feed)!<\/p>\n<p>The end of the day included a presentation from the staff at Four Seasons Hual\u00e4lai and their incorporation of Nohona Hawai\u2018i at the resort, everything from relationships between the staff and the\u00a0 property, the staff and the guests, and especially the staff amongst themselves.\u00a0 In true Nohona Hawai\u2018i, <strong>Aunty Kaulu Amaral (&#8217;76)<\/strong>, graced us with a few hula as Uncle Earl sang.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-362\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/aahirano\/files\/2009\/08\/IMG_0288-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0288\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/aahirano\/files\/2009\/08\/IMG_0288-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/aahirano\/files\/2009\/08\/IMG_0288-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/aahirano\/files\/2009\/08\/IMG_0288.JPG 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As we start a new school year, we are always looking at building our capacity in Nohona Hawai\u2018i.\u00a0 This year was no different.
